Jimmie Dale Gilmore
Jimmie Dale Gilmore (born May 6, 1945 in Amarillo , Texas ) is an American country singer-songwriter.
Beginnings
He grew up in Lubbock , Texas, the city that produced Buddy Holly and Delbert McClinton . As a teenager, he met Butch Hancock and Joe Ely . In 1971 the three of them founded the Flatlanders together with other musicians . A year later, a first album was recorded in Nashville and the single Dallas was released. The album was only released as a cassette by the record company ; the single turned out to be a flop. A short time later, the Flatlanders disbanded. Jimmie Dale Gilmore left the music business temporarily and spent the next six years in Denver.
Career
In 1980 Gilmore moved to Austin , Texas and began performing in clubs in the area. In the meantime, Joe Ely had made a career. The former Flatlanders and thus also Gilmore gained notoriety in the scene. In 1988 Ely finally signed a record deal with the Hightone label. In the same year the first solo album was produced: Fair And Square . As with the following albums, mainly self-written material and songs by Butch Hancock were used.
His third, critically acclaimed album After Awhile is considered his musical breakthrough. Further productions of consistently high quality followed. Another highlight is the CD One Endless Night , released in 2000 .
With his peculiar nasal tenor voice , it was not easy for Jimmie Dale Gilmore to attract a mass audience. The indisputable quality of his music, however, earned him a small but loyal and convinced following. He often sings genre classics on his CDs and repeatedly plays pieces by Townes van Zandt .
