action

Niklas is considered a nerd at his school, but can handle his position as a loner very well. Rather, he suffers from the influence of his single mother, who protects him too much. At the school Niklas only has a friendly relationship with the dark-skinned Peter. In contrast to Niklas, however, Peter is bullied and forced to pay money by the drug clique at school, including under threat of physical violence. The leader of the clique is the psychopathic classmate Annelie, who stands out just because of her black clothes, with a woolen hat and hood . When Niklas stood in front of his buddy to protect himself and calls Annelie “spoiled” in the school canteen, he too aroused her hatred.

Regardless of this, he intends to leave school in order to visit an authoring institute in London , where he sees his special literary skills better promoted. Under the emotional pressure of his mother, Niklas decides the night before departure to forego the flight to London and gives his ticket to a strange girl in a nightspot.

Change of scene: Accompanied by her friend Marcus, Annelie raids a jewelry store that night. The next day, however, Marcus realizes that his girlfriend has gone too far and anonymously reports the robbery to the police. It is easy for the police to arrest Annelie at school and confiscate the loot she hid in the locker . Annelie is arrested, but released by the police the same day.

Annelie and her clique are now anxious to bring the traitor to justice and initially suspect him to be Peter. The members of the gang intercept Peter and use physical force to force him to confess. In order to save his skin, but also on the assumption that his friend Niklas has already gone to London, Peter mentions Niklas to his tormentors as the person Annelie had betrayed to the police.

The clique, still in the presence of the completely intimidated Peter, now lies in wait for Niklas. In an extremely brutal way and without any scruples, Annelie repeatedly kicks Niklas' defenseless body on the ground. When the witnesses present soon realized that Niklas was killed by Annelie, they followed the orders of their leader and buried the supposedly dead body of Niklas.

The next morning: Niklas enters the school as usual and takes his place in the classroom. But he has to realize that he is neither visible to other people, nor that his words are perceived, he also sees actions performed by him as immediately undone. He realizes that he is dead in an intermediate world. As an invisible person, Niklas is initially following the police investigation into his disappearance. He comes to the realization that Annelie is obviously taking revenge on him because she assumed that he gave the police the information about the jewelery robbery. Annelie doesn't show any kind of remorse for the time being.

For the investigating police, Peter and Annelie were soon considered suspects. When Peter tries to escape from a police questioning, he is taken into custody. The police released him the next day, but with the intention of having him watched. This enables the police to arrest the other clique members involved in the crime and to be taken to the scene by them. To everyone's surprise, however, the body is no longer at the crime scene.

Only using the example of a dying bird does Niklas realize that his current existence is based on the fact that his earthly body is still alive. Again and again Niklas tries to talk to his “environment”, especially with Annelie, to find out from her where she had taken him after the crime. Niklas actually uses telepathy to make Annelie perceive his words.

Annelie is now, after the confession of her clique colleagues, a suspect and is wanted by the police. She arranges a secret meeting with Peter to ask him for help with her escape, but learns from him that neither Niklas nor he himself had betrayed her at the time. At the grave of her deceased mother Annelie shows feelings for the first time and lets Niklas know, crying, that it was not she who removed the corpse from the crime scene.

Peter can no longer bear his complicity in his friend's death and decides to hang himself in his room. At this moment, Niklas also enters Peter's room, but, being in “another world”, cannot prevent Peter from making up his mind. During a brief moment in which Peter is in agony, hanging on the rope, the two meet in the intermediate world - Peter lets Niklas know that he has brought him "to the locks".

Now that Niklas knows where his still living body is, he goes there immediately. Due to the information in Peter's farewell letter, the medical services arrive there only a little later. Niklas 'body is taken to the hospital, where Niklas' mother learns from the doctor that her son is to be regarded as brain dead . Niklas has to overhear in horror that his mother refuses to turn off the life support machine, which means that he will continue to be trapped in his intermediate world.

Annelie now wants to take revenge on her friend Marcus, not only because he was the one who denounced her to the police, but also because Annelie sees him as responsible for killing an innocent man with Niklas. Annelie, however, pulls the pistol from Marcus when he can credibly demonstrate that Niklas was found alive and driven to the hospital.

After a breakneck chase with the police, Annelie manages to gain access to the hospital. In front of the door to the hospital room, she meets Niklas' mother. Niklas manages to speak to his mother through Annelie's mouth and explain to her "that she should let go of him". Annelie, guided by Niklas' spirit, goes into the sickroom to switch off the life-support machine.

Annelie is then escorted out of the hospital by the police and handcuffed.

criticism

"The directors Bergvall and Sandquist stage a dark tale of the supernatural over the spiritual limbo of a high school student between life and death."

- All Movie Guide : Jason Buchanan

“Despite the good basic idea, Joel Bergvalls and Simon Sandquist's work lack the captivating moments that are expected from a thriller. The Swedish film project is convincing due to the consistently good camera work, and some special effects are well embedded in the story. [...] the work cannot benefit from the achievements of the main actors. Gustaf Skarsgård does his job with flying colors, while the constantly hooded Tuva Novotny as Annelie doesn't do justice to her role. "
