Daniél Espinosa ; actually Jorge Daniel Espinosa (born March 23, 1977 in Trångsund , Huddinge , Sweden ) is a Chilean - Swedish director .

Life

Espinosa's parents fled Chile about a month before he was born to escape the Pinochet regime. Although both parents are academics, they still lived in working-class neighborhoods. However, Espinosa also lived in Africa for a while because his mother was a UN worker . As a 16-year-old, he was on the verge of ending up in prison for two years for some crimes. But thanks to a psychological report, he was saved from it and received a grant for Herlufsholm . During the stay at the boarding school, he developed a certain ambition. Every student there wanted to be a millionaire before their 30th birthday. Since Espinosa only wanted to own a café at some point and wanted to keep up with the others, he decided, influenced by the son of Lasse Hallström , who was his roommate, to make films. And so he attended Den Danske Filmskole from 1999 to 2003 . His graduation film at the Danish Film School was Bokseren . With Babylonsjukan followed his second feature film, which was based on the script of a childhood friend.

With Easy Money , Espinosa released one of the most successful Swedish films in 2010. The film is based on the novel Jens Lapidus and was cast with Joel Kinnaman in the lead role. Espinosa was made aware of Lapidus' work Snabba Cash by Josef Fares .

In 2012 Espinosas directed an American film for the first time in Safe House . This was followed by the film Life , which hit theaters in 2017.

Espinosa is married to Nina, a doctor, and lives in Sweden. He speaks six languages, including English and Danish, Portuguese and Creole .
