GSI - Spezialeinheit Göteborg is a Swedish crime film series which was co-produced by ZDF and which was broadcast between 2009 and 2015. In the Swedish original, the films were released under the name Johan Falk , named after the main character, a Swedish police officer played by Jakob Eklund . The series follows on from the trilogy of films Zero Tolerance - Witnesses in Fear , Executive Protection - The Bomb is Ticking and The Third Wave - The Conspiracy , published between 1999 and 2003 , in which Eklund had already played the same role. In addition to Eklund, Joel Kinnaman plays an important role as V-Mann Frank Wagner.
Falk's work for the GSI special unit, which investigates directly in the criminal milieu with the help of V-men, in order to solve serious crimes and fight organized crime is discussed. The first two seasons each contain six full-length episodes. The third and final season is called Johan Falk - GSI Göteborg in German-speaking countries . It consists of only five episodes and was shot without Kinnaman's participation. The series has an age rating of 15 and over in Sweden, in Germany most episodes are aged 16 and over.
Framework story
The main character of the series is Johan Falk, who is returning to his Swedish hometown Gothenburg after the incidents of the film trilogy of 1999/2001 from a five-year assignment at Europol in The Hague . In the successful GSI special unit he takes targeted action against organized crime and works closely with informants in the crime scene.
After the death of a colleague, Johan takes over his contact person Frank Wagner, who is one of the most important sources of the unit. Wagner, who comes from a family of police officers and who actually owns a bar, was hired as an undercover agent and smuggled into a Gothenburg gang of criminals, of which he has now been promoted to deputy head. In the course of the collaboration, a friendship develops between Johan and Frank. While Frank urges him to finally get him out of the crime scene and enable a normal life with his girlfriend Marie and their child, Johan is torn between the enormous importance of Frank as a source of information and his friendly relationship with the undercover agent. With the promise of help soon, he urged him to provide more and more help with the investigative work of the special unit.
Wagner's work for the police is uncovered in the second season due to the insufficient protection of the police by a mafia lawyer. Wagner has to flee and protect his family from the revenge of his gang colleagues and criminal contacts. However, the police department refuses to help Wagner. Only with the support of Falk and the GSI can Wagner fend off the reenactments of his enemies, but has to flee Sweden at the end of the second season.
In the third season, a previously unknown Russian criminal organization tries to force Falk to cooperate. Falk's DNA traces left on a corpse in Estonia are used as leverage. The GSI tries to find out more about the organization, among other things with the help of Frank Wagner's former gang leader Seth Rydell ( Jens Hultén ). Falk's partner Helèn is also trying to get her hands on sensitive business documents through her ex-husband Örjan, who worked as a building contractor with the organization. As a result, Falk's family is increasingly being targeted by criminals. The GSI also has to find out that the organization was able to place an informant in the police apparatus who repeatedly and sensitively sabotages the work of the special unit with his information. The organization uses the most brutal means to prevent their exposure. Falk decides to sacrifice himself to protect his family from retaliation. He is badly mistreated and tortured by a contract killer. He appears to be killed in the process. The GSI can expose the organization, but is then temporarily dissolved. From the end sequence of the season finale, Phoenix from the Ashes , a meeting between Rydell and Falk's colleague Sophie Nordh u. a. flashbacks show that Falk, with Rydell's help, faked his death to the criminals, but also to the police.
Others
The role of Frank Wagner is based on the former Swedish police officer Peter Rätz, who infiltrated the Hells Angels and Bandidos for several years and now lives in a witness protection program abroad. Kinnaman visited him for four days and learned his behavior to use later in the series.
What is remarkable is the continuity of the actors. Although the film trilogy and the series were shot over a period of almost twenty years, recurring characters are played by the same actors, even in small supporting roles - alongside Johan Falk, his partner Helèn and their daughter Nina, who is only ten years old in the first film , Fellow police officers like Anja and Peter Kroon and the police chief Franzén. The criminal Leo Gaut, his wife and his daughter are also embodied by the same actors in the first film Zero Tolerance - Witnesses in Fear from 1999 and ten years later in a series episode of the first season, whereby the daughter is only seven years old when it first appears. Pernilla and Ralf from Executive Protection - The bomb is ticking from 2001 appear fourteen years later in the second episode of the third season and are also played by the same actors.
The first film Zero Tolerance - Witnesses in Fear with Johan Falk begins on Christmas Eve; the last episode of the third season ends on Christmas Eve.
On some websites the feature film trilogy is listed as the first season; after this count there are four seasons.
