action

Jimmy Conlon, formerly known as the "gravedigger" as a professional killer in the service of underworld boss Shawn Maguire, has grown old. He lives in New York as an alcoholic on the poverty line, but is kept afloat by his childhood friend Maguire. Detective Harding has been investigating him for decades but has never been able to convict him.

Now that Jimmy Conlon is again targeted by the police, he has to decide: Either he sticks to Maguire and his machinations or to his own family, with whom he has had no contact for years. Within a single night he has to convince his son Mike that he is acting on behalf of his family.

It's Christmas time and Jimmy Conlon is supposed to play Santa Claus in the Shawn Maguire family to make some money. He appears drunk and spoils the party.

Shawn Maguire's son Danny is involved in drug dealing in the neighborhood his father controls. Although Shawn Maguire has banned the deals with the Albanian drug traffickers who want to influence the neighborhood, Danny offers them business. When the Albanians demand an account for a broken deal, Danny shoots them during the agreed handover.

Jimmy's son Mike Conlon, who works as a limousine driver, has driven the two Albanians to Danny's house and is waiting for them to return. In the meantime, he talks to his protégé Legs, an African-American boy whom he mentors . Finally he lets Legs get into the stretch limousine for a moment. The boy is filming himself in the limousine with his smartphone when he and Mike happen to witness a police murder. The murderers are Maguire's son Danny and his accomplice, who are on the run after the incidents in Danny's apartment.

Mike is now in the focus of the criminals as an unwelcome witness. They come to him and threaten him. When Danny aims at Mike, he is suddenly shot from behind and fatally injured. It's Jimmy Conlon, Mike's father, who chased Danny and saved his son at the last minute. In the loyalty conflict with his former boss and friend Maguire, he has decided to have his own family. Conlon knows that Maguire will take revenge on him and his son Mike. A merciless game of cat and mouse through the New York night takes its course.

While Jimmy Conlon calls Shawn Maguire about the death of his son Danny, Mike calls the police. The officials are not interested in clarifying the case. You have been bribed by Maguire and want to kidnap Mike to a remote area. But Jimmy follows the police car in his car and can free Mike after a brutal chase through the streets of New York. He kills one of the policemen.

Detective Harding has now heard of the new development. Jimmy Conlon and his son Mike are wanted everywhere as police murderers. Shawn Maguire, however, wants to avenge the death of his son Danny. Jimmy advises his son Mike to keep his family safe, but when he arrives at his apartment it is almost too late. Maguire sent two men out to find Mike's family. Mike hides in a bathroom with his wife and children. The two pursuers look for her in vain and have to leave without having achieved anything.

Jimmy meets Shawn Maguire in a pub to convince him of Mike's innocence in the death of Danny. But it is less the fact that Shawn thinks Mike is guilty of his son's death than the possibility of taking revenge on Jimmy that prompts him to start a hunt for Mike. He wants to do to Jimmy what he did to him. Only after Mike is dead does he want to kill him too.

Jimmy leaves the meeting with Shawn and escapes to Madison Square Garden , where an event has just ended. Shawn hires professional killer Andrew Price to find and kill Mike. Meanwhile, Mike and his father are looking for the boy Legs, who happened to film the murder of the police officer on his smartphone. The video could prove that it was Danny, not Mike, who killed the cops. But the boy has disappeared. Mike and Jimmy search the entire block Legs lives on and at least find his younger brother. Mike is Legs' mentor whom he trains in boxing. He tells his brother to call him wherever he is hiding in order to get the exonerating video.

The neighborhood has now alerted the police. Police storm the house. Andrew Price, the contract killer, is also well informed about the police radio. He gains entry into the building and switches off the power supply there. With a night vision device he has an advantage over Mike and his father Jimmy. A fire broke out in the hustle and bustle of an apartment due to a burning gas flame. Here Price meets Jimmy and a fight ensues. Mike, who was about to leave the house to return to his family, saves his father at the last minute. When he tries to shoot the injured Price, Jimmy warns him again: He should never kill someone in such a situation and take the same path as he did back then.

Since it is likely that Jimmy Conlon will not survive the night, he wants to visit his mother again after a long time. However, he learns that his mother has been hospitalized. Mike, who was with him, is warned by his uncle Eddie not to trust Jimmy. He even killed his own cousin Billy when there was a risk that he would have betrayed Jimmy's boss Maguire to the police. Mike turns away with disgust from his father, who at the time had preferred the position of his employer to his own family. Jimmy now visits his mother alone in the hospital. However, she can no longer speak to him and Jimmy writes his confession on the back of a prayer slip on the bedside table. He wants to close with his criminal past and protect Mike and his family.

After that, Jimmy calls his former boss Maguire again and tries to stop him from persecuting his son Mike. He meets Maguire one more time and causes a bloodbath among his men. At a nearby freight yard, the two men finally duel between the parked freight wagons. Shawn is fatally hit by Jimmy. Shawn still wants to flee, but is caught by Jimmy and dies in his arms.

Mike Conlon returns to his wife and children who are hiding in a vacation home in the mountains. Here he wants to face the police. Detective Harding has since received the video from Legs showing that Mike is innocent. Jimmy also comes to the vacation home to warn Mike. Because Maguire's assassin Price is still on his way to carry out his assignment. Mike doesn't want to let his father into the house at first, but his wife Gabriela invites him in and introduces her grandfather to the children.

The children then go to the lake with their parents to feed the ducks. They don't notice that Price has appeared in front of the house. He injures Jimmy with a shot. One last time he reaches for a weapon that is hidden in the house. In front of the house there is a showdown between the two killers. Jimmy is badly injured. When Mike returns to help his father and distract Price, Jimmy shoots the killer with the rifle. Then he succumbs to his injuries himself. In his hand he still holds the note that he wrote on his mother's bedside.

When the police arrive, Mike also drops his gun. His innocence has been proven and he can return to a regular life with his family. He also resumes his work as a boxing trainer and looks after boys and Legs in order to enable them to integrate into society despite difficult family circumstances.

The critical consensus states: "As usual, Liam Neeson is in top form, but Run All Night suffers from its overloaded plot and an overly routine implementation."

The film service believes that the film is a "[r] asant staged gangster thriller, which pathetically emphasizes the importance of family ties and, through unnecessary intensification, becomes grotesque." Staged as a “homage to genre film classics of the 1970s”, “the film also distances itself from them due to its stylish, brisk style”.
