Horst Thorau

Horst Thorau (born May 15, 1930 in Berlin ; † September 21, 1989 in Leipzig ) was a German photographer and university professor.

Life

After completing his photography training at the Lettehaus in Berlin (1948–1949), Thorau studied photography (1951–1954) at the College of Applied Arts in Magdeburg under Johann Graf and Karl Sütterlin . Then he worked as a photographer at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Thorau then went back to Magdeburg and worked there as a lecturer in photography at the technical school mentioned until it was closed (1956–1963). From 1963 until his sudden death in 1989 Thorau was at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig (HGB) in addition to the department heads of the course Photography Prof. Heinz Föppel and later Prof. Peter Pachnicke the senior lecturer in the distance learning . In 1970 Thorau passed his external diploma at the HGB. In Leipzig Thorau was the teacher and mentor of numerous important GDR photographers, such as Gundula Schulze Eldowy and Dietmar Riemann .

In addition to his teaching activities, the photographer was known for his landscapes and industrial landscapes, as well as for his photomontages and photography in various techniques. Above all, his bold color prints should be mentioned here. Horst Thorau was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK) and a member of the central board of the Society for Photography. He was also active as a juror, for example as chairman of the jury for the 2nd portrait photo show of the GDR in 1981.
