action
Jonathan White, like his father, is a policeman. After 16 years he is returning to the neighborhood in New York City where he grew up and which he once had to leave. He works on the patrol and is very committed because he wants to take care of his family well. His life is out of whack when events from the past catch up with him. New details emerge about the unsolved murder of two young junkies in 1986, and it turns out that the police are also involved in the crime. Journalist Loren is investigating the case and her revelations also endanger Jonathan White.
It turns out that Jonathan shot a junkie in self-defense as a teenager. When he breaks into an apartment with Vinnie in order to steal 1,000 US dollars with which the two youngsters want to break away from their desolate surroundings, they are disturbed by a dealer. When the dealer kicks on Jonathan's dog, Jonathan pushes him down a flight of stairs. The dealer dies from the injuries. Vinnie and Jonathan swear to each other never to speak about what happened.
A local newspaper editorial team published anonymous letters 16 years later, indicating that there were irregularities in the investigation into the two deaths in the mid-1980s. Jonathan gets nervous because he fears he will be held responsible for the two deaths. He then meets with the journalist Loren Bridges, who shows him the following day's edition of the newspaper. Its title page adorns the police chief, who is accused of failing to investigate the cases, not questioning witnesses and not arresting suspects. After the meeting between Jonathan and Loren Bridges, the journalist is found shot dead.
Detective Stanford and his godson, the current police chief, want to solve the situation by killing Vinnie in order to present him in retrospect as a perpetrator and to portray his death as a suicide. Jonathan tries to save Vinnie and is shot in the process. The current chief of police then gives Vinnie a revolver and tells him to shoot Jonathan because he has destroyed Vinnie's life.
However, Vinnie shoots the police chief and is then shot by his godfather, Detective Stanford. As he dies, Vinnie assures his friend Jonathan that he has never given anything away.
Ultimately, it turns out that a girl from the neighborhood who had observed the events in the house opposite sent the letters. She sends one last letter to Jonathan privately and tells him that he can now live freely.
The police portray Vinnie as a perpetrator to the press and hold him responsible for the deaths in the mid-1980s.
