production
“This film is about how we adapt to change, in general. The world has always changed, but in our present the engine of change is the digital revolution. And regardless of whether we adapt to it or protest against it - we definitely have to act on it. "
Directed by Olivier Assayas , who also wrote the script. With the film, he dares to get very close to the discussion about the digital revolution: "I wanted to make a film that is part of the current conversation in society and in which the viewer is in a certain sense part of this exchange", said assayas. “This film is about how we adapt to change, in general. The world has always changed, but in our present the engine of change is the digital revolution . And it doesn't matter whether we adapt to it or protest against it - we definitely have to act on it, ”the director continues.
Guillaume Canet and Juliette Binoche play the publisher Alain and his wife Selena, Vincent Macaigne played the role of the author Léonard. Magdalena Miedl thinks that the glue that holds the many discussions between the various people in the film together are the affairs criss-crossing the circle of friends. For example, the publisher Alain has a thing going on with the younger social media expert Laure, to whom he feels inferior due to age. Alain's wife Selena has been sleeping with his author Leonard for years, and his wife, of course, knows about the fraud, since she reads Leonard's books after all.
The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Astrid Kollex on behalf of DMT - Digital Media Technologie GmbH, Hamburg. Christin Marquitan lends her voice to Selena in the German version.
The film was shown for the first time on August 31, 2018 as part of the Venice Film Festival , where it was nominated for the Golden Lion. It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018, and screened at the New York Film Festival and the Hamptons International Film Festival in October 2018 . In October 2018 it will be shown at the Viennale , afterwards at the Tokyo International Film Festival in the World Focus section. The film was released in French cinemas on January 16, 2019. It was released in German cinemas on June 6, 2019 and in Austrian cinemas on June 7, 2019. At the end of July 2019 it was shown at the Jerusalem Film Festival .

Reviews
The film has so far received the approval of 89 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and has received an average of 7.3 out of a possible 10 points.
Jon Frosch of The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as a wonderful counterpart to Olivier Assayas ' recent films End of Summer and The Clouds of Sils Maria , but what all three films have in common is that each has in its own way the effects of global economic, technological and global impact examine cultural changes for individual and collective French identities. The filmmaker's interest in the consequences of globalization, which thematically runs through all of his works, turns out to be very present in this witty and astute portrait of people. The film is a pleasure for lovers of the director and for lovers of French cinema, so Frosch. From the first picture, the viewer is pushed into the middle of conversations that are dense, even dizzying, with conflicting opinions, according to Kindle vs. Books, print vs. Web and Art vs. Entertainment. All the main characters have difficulties in reconciling their inner and outer life and are torn between ideals and obligations, private desires and public attitudes, and tradition and everything new, according to Frosch. Selena acts instinctively and is independent, but always makes decisions in the head and not in the heart. Leonard is clearly hungry for the success that he himself despises. Valterie's political idealism contradicts the harsh pragmatism she advocates in her romantic relationship. In the film, as in many of his works, the director celebrates the seductive beauty of France and the richness of the country's culture, so Frosch, but also shows the struggle with the changes in the country, which he makes appear deeply human.
Magdalena Miedl remarks that it is not the first time that Assayas has incorporated modern technology into one of his films. In Demonlover it was the world of cyberspace , in Assayas' last film Personal Shopper a long scene was almost exclusively about a conversation via text message on the smartphone. Such attempts are always tricky in the cinema because they quickly become outdated and ingratiating, but Assayas has escaped this danger so far, says Miedl.
Frédéric Jaeger writes in Spiegel.online: "In general, the film looks like the perfect symbiosis of telenovela and intellectual diagnosis of the time: The fun of following the characters into their depths comes first".
