Clean is a 2004 film directed by French director Olivier Assayas and starring Nick Nolte and Maggie Cheung . The film started in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2004 .
action
The film tells the story of Emily Wang who, after a turbulent period in life, struggles to see her son again, who is raised by his grandparents.
The main character Emily Wang dreams of a great career as a rock singer. When using the film, however, little of this is felt. Her husband Lee Hauser, with whom she has a son, is still above her on the career ladder - but the shadow of the fall dawns on both of them, because they lead a life that is marked by substance abuse and life doubts.
After Lee dies of an overdose, Emily's life changes radically. She is jailed for drug possession and loses custody of her son. After being released from prison, she tries to get her life back on track. She travels to Paris, where she is accepted into a methadone program. But life without her son Jay becomes a burden. He lives with his grandparents Rosemary and Albrecht. It is only after Rosemary's death that Albrecht tries to get in touch with Emily again.
Reviews
“Olivier Assaya's film Clean, [...], lives less from a subtle story, which is too clichéd in some places, than from Cheung's expressiveness, Nick Nolte's routine serenity, who slowly suggests what kind of roles his career could continue and from Assaya's feeling for expressive situations, which is congenially dressed in impressive images by the masterful camera work of Eric Gautier.
