Mary is a 2005 American - Italian - French drama film directed by Abel Ferrara , who also co-wrote the script.

action

TV presenter Ted Younger is preparing a series of programs dedicated to the life of Jesus . His pregnant wife Elizabeth is about to give birth to her child, amid complications looming. Younger invites film star and director Tony Childress to his show, whose controversial film This Is My Blood (he plays Jesus) has just been released. The car the men drive is attacked by devout people. The presenter has an affair with Childress' assistant Gretchen Mol (name of an actress from one of Ferrara's previous films). His reality is shaken, he experiences a breakdown and realizes that he has previously lived in an illusory world.

The arrogant director Childress sees his magnum opus, from which sequences are repeatedly faded in, endangered by the fundamentalist protests and moves himself into a mad world.

The leading actress of the film This Is My Blood Marie Palesi travels to Jerusalem because after the end of the shooting from her role of Maria Magdalena she can no longer find her way back to her old world as an actress. Her life has also been completely turned inside out (through the encounter with the country and the film). She survived an attack unharmed. Younger calls her, but she is not interested in appearing on his show. He phoned her several times, probably out of the irrational feeling that she could somehow help him. The final scene shows her at the Sea of Galilee. It's not clear whether it's a scene from Childress' film or the present.

Reviews

Ray Bennett wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on September 29, 2005 that the " sinister " and forgettable religious film was not convincing. Forest Whitaker and Heather Graham's representations are professional; Juliette Binoche doesn't know what to do with her role.

Leslie Felperin wrote in Variety magazine on September 19, 2005 that the film was not as outstanding as Bad Lieutenant , but also not as a " dud " as New Rose Hotel . The lighting and the soundtrack would make him a “ spiritual horror, without devils, monsters or any other bad guy, but full of oppressive fear ”; in the end it would become melodramatic.

According to Nana A. T. Rebhan on the Arte website, the main problem with the film is that it breaks down into disconnected parts, which puts the viewer's attention to the test.

Ekkehard Knörer said in the Taz on October 19, 2006, the script and direction seemed as if they hardly knew “ what they want or do ”. But the film was photographed grandiose throughout , and for some moviegoers it was fascinating and irritating , somewhere between “ intentionally open structure of meaning ” and “ unstructured jumble ”.

Lukas Foerster writes on critic.de that Ferrara confronts its heroes with the abysses of their own existence, the cinematic form does not distinguish between subjective and objective images. What remained was the metaphysical claim that it was not always clear what was a cinematic aesthetic concept about Mary and what was creative chaos. But the consistent, powerful finale suggests that the director knows exactly what they're doing in the rest of the work.
