In Love with My Wife is a French - Belgian comedy film directed by Daniel Auteuil from 2018.

Publisher Daniel happened to meet his longtime friend Patrick on the street. They haven't seen each other for a while and Daniel invites Patrick and his new girlfriend Emma over to dinner for the weekend. He cautiously shares the proposal with his wife Isabelle, who outraged refuses because Patrick has left his wife Laurence, who is Isabelle's best friend, for Emma. At night, however, Isabelle dreams that Daniel meets Patrick and that he realizes in conversation with Patrick that he is unhappy with Isabelle. She rushed to agree to the weekend meal.
Patrick appears a little earlier than Emma and asks Daniel and Isabelle not to ask either where they met, as Emma is uncomfortable. Emma appears and Daniel is carried away by her. The meal goes by with the painfully hidden jealousy of Isabelle and a Daniel who keeps getting lost in daydreams in which Emma plays a central role. This leads to the fact that he is unfocused, sometimes gives bizarre answers and appears nervous and over-the-top. Isabelle, in turn, believes she can hear from Patrick's hints that Emma is a prostitute and that they met in a strip club. Contrary to Patrick's request, she asks how the two of them got to know each other: It turns out that Emma would like to be an actress and waitress; Both met at the gastroenterologist .
Daniel later heats chocolate for cream puffs in the kitchen , with Emma watching him. When she tastes the liquid chocolate, Daniel imagines himself kissing her - Patrick appears in the kitchen and Daniel, frightened, pours the chocolate over Emma. Isabelle lends her one of her clothes and makes fun of Daniel about Emma and Patrick, who always shows off to them, so he invited her to his new house on Ibiza . After the chocolate incident, Patrick and Emma leave in a rush and Daniel is upset about Patrick's self-portrayal. At home, Emma confesses to her boyfriend that she has fallen in love with Daniel. Parallel to the main plot, Daniel imagines a life with Emma: Isabelle and Daniel accept Patrick and Emma's invitation to Ibiza. Daniel sees Emma in the swimming pool and also experiences Emma and Patrick arguing. Emma receives an offer to play in Uncle Vanya at the Théâtre de l'Atelier in Paris . Daniel watches the play several times and secretly goes out with Emma. She broke up with Patrick, who is suffering. He suspects that Emma is with the director of her play. When Emma wants to separate from Daniel because he is married, he invites her to Venice . They both have a good time here before Emma suddenly breaks up with him because the relationship has no future. Daniel wants to go back to Isabelle, but she is no longer interested in him. He has also lost Patrick's friendship. Emma and the director of the play become a couple.
Given these prospects, in the present, Daniel decides to ignore Emma and stay true to his wife. He invites her to Venice and Isabelle reacts happily.

In love with my wife is based on the play Behind the Facade by Florian Zeller , who also wrote the screenplay. It was the fourth film directed by Daniel Auteuil. He also took on the leading role and sings the song Ma vie, mon cœur, ma jeunesse written by Thomas Dutronc in one scene . Auteuil had already played the role of Daniel in Behind the Facade at the Théâtre de Paris in 2016 , where he had also directed.
The film was shot in Paris and Venice. The scene in which Daniel and Patrick first meet was shot on the Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris; other scenes were shot in front of the Théâtre de l'Atelier. Charlotte Betaillole created the costumes and Herald Najar made the film .
In love with my wife came to French cinemas on April 25, 2018 and also opened in German cinemas on October 11, 2018. The film was released on DVD in Germany in February 2019.

Der Spiegel wrote that in love with my wife was “a disgusting film”: “The impression grows and hardens from minute to minute that this film has committed itself right down to the stupid final point on the agenda that men are currently scolding too much to jump aside apologetically. The more refined he behaves, [...] the more disgusting he becomes. ”“ These 85 minutes are only peripherally funny, often just silly, rarely crisp, often just wooden, ”said the Saxon newspaper .
epd Film stated that Auteuil “embraces old-fashioned clichés when staging couple relationships without humorous barbs and with clumsy timing.” The Neue Presse also wrote that “the sexist view of this comedy […] 2018 [seems embarrassing].” “For perplexity takes care of the antiquated image of women, which feeds the humorous punch lines and in today's context appears almost suicidal, ”wrote the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .
