action

Radiologist Max, rheumatologist Paul and hair salon owner Simon have been best friends for 35 years . Max has had affairs again and again and has been in an on / off relationship with Magali for ten years. He is now faced with the choice of moving in with her or being left by her. Paul is married to Karine, but the marriage has long been characterized by indifference. Max has two children: 22-year-old Pascaline, who wants to become a doctor, and Antonin, who is a little younger. Both children still live at home. Simon is married to the attractive Estelle; marriage is childless.

As is so often the case, the fun meet on a Friday evening at Max's to play cards. Simon appears 50 minutes late and stands completely beside himself. He reveals to his two friends that he killed Estelle. She was obviously on the phone with a lover, refused to tell him who was on the phone when asked, and ended up reacting aggressively. After two slaps in the face, Simon choked her until she gave no more sign of life. He is sure that she was dead when he left the apartment. Max and Paul react initially in disbelief and then stunned. The plan to call the police is discarded as Simon should have done it immediately. Simon doesn't want to flee the country either. Instead, he asks his friends to lie for him and to testify that he has already been to see Max at 9 p.m. Both refuse, however, and Simon reacts disappointed because he has always been there for both of them. Paul begins to mediate between the two sides, as he does not want to commit himself to any position.

The discussions are interrupted by the arrival of the ordered pizza. Simon collapses while eating because he had recently taken tranquilizers and tons of alcohol. He is taken to Max's bedroom. Max and Paul continue to discuss Simon's case. Max puts forward the thesis that Simon did not act spontaneously, but planned to kill the complicated Estelle and now wants to use her, the friends. Both go to Simon's house to make sure that Estelle is really dead. Ambulances and police cars are parked in front of the house and they both flee. Back at Max, the discussions continue. Max accuses Paul of being too scared to act. Paul, on the other hand, confesses to Max that he has hated him for 35 years because Max's life is cold and he is not modern. In the further conversation, both realize that Estelle once wanted to seduce them both, but she was rejected by both.

The action takes a turn when Pascaline calls Simon's cell phone at night. Paul is beside himself, he believes that Pascaline and Simon are having a secret affair. Simon is still not available, so Paul angrily wants to notify the police. At the crucial moment, however, both friends are unable to make themselves understood to the police on the phone.

The next morning the police call Max and ask Simon to come to the police station. Estelle has charged him with assault: she wasn't dead, she just passed out. Before Simon leaves, Paul confronts him about Pascaline. Simon reports that he has been Pascaline's confidante and “suggestion box” for a long time, as she has the feeling that she cannot talk to her parents. She is pregnant by a boy her age and also wants to drop out of her medical degree. Paul is devastated, but shortly afterwards receives a text message from his daughter in which she tells him that she wants to talk to him. Paul is leaving. Max now calls Magali and tells her that he would like to live with her. She in turn tells him that she is expecting a child, and he reacts with pleasure.

Nos femmes is based on the play Our Women (originally Nos femmes ) by Eric Assous, which premiered on September 24, 2013 at the Théâtre de Paris . In the play that Richard Berry staged, Berry and Auteuil already took on their later film roles, while the role of Simon was played by Didier Flamand . The play, which ran until February 2014, became one of the most successful performances at French private theater in 2013. Auteuil received a Molière nomination for Best Actor in 2014 for his role as medical doctor Paul .

As early as October 2013, Berry and Auteuil showed an interest in making a film of the play. The shooting took place in Paris in August and September 2014. One of the filming locations was Avenue du Président Wilson, not far from the Musée Galliera . In contrast to the play, the women of the men also appear in the film; the role of Paul's daughter Pascaline took over Joséphine Berry, Richard Berry's daughter.

Nos femmes had its preview on April 27, 2015 in Paris. The film was released in French cinemas on April 29, 2015, where it was seen by around 426,000 viewers.

criticism

"When French cinema laughs at domestic violence", Slate titled the film review for Nos femmes , and described the film as "unspeakable nothingness"; the play of the actors makes you cry. Marie Claire took up the criticism of the film and described Nos femmes as a "failed attempt to laugh at domestic violence". The film wants to be funny, but ultimately makes money by depicting violence in marriage. It is particularly critical that Paul does not alert the police in the film because his friend killed his wife, but only because the same friend apparently has an affair with his grown daughter.

Télérama gave the film two stars out of five and found that over time the actors would only gesticulate faster and faster and scream loudly. In contrast to the play, the film lacks visual movement, noted the Luxemburger Tageblatt .
