One hundred and one nights , also known as 101 Nights - The Dreams of M. Cinema (Original title: Les Cent et Une Nuits de Simon Cinéma ), is a star-studded French comedy film by Agnès Varda from 1995.
action
Monsieur Cinéma, a curious old man and a legend of film history , wants to remember nothing less than the complete history of cinema in his mind's eye on his centenary. To help his dwindling memory on the jumps, he hires Camille, a young film student, who visits him every day and tells episodes from film history. Camille agrees in view of the respectable wages she is to receive and is kidnapped by Monsieur Cinéma into a world from which she can no longer escape after a short time. Not only does Marcello Mastroianni come by for a game of chess every now and then, Gérard Depardieu , Jean-Paul Belmondo , Alain Delon , Hanna Schygulla , Jeanne Moreau , Catherine Deneuve , Robert De Niro and many other stars drop by from time to time.
Fascinated, Camille tells her friend Mica, a budding director, about her new job. Mica immediately senses the chance to pull money out of the old man's pocket for his first own film production. For this purpose, a friend is said to play Monsieur Cinémas great-grandson Vincent, who went to India years ago . The friend is supposed to take the inheritance as Vincent and then share the money with Camille and Mica. "Vincent" finally agrees and Monsieur Cinéma actually believes he is seeing his lost and only offspring again.
However, when an Elizabeth Taylor double persuades Monsieur Cinéma to donate his inheritance to her AIDS foundation, Mica's plan is unsuccessful. Camille then travels with Monsieur Cinéma to the Cannes Film Festival and then to Hollywood , where Monsieur Cinéma is euphoric.

Reviews
"A film like a sparkler that threatens to stifle the viewer's imagination with all its charm due to the mountain of quotes and allusions," said the lexicon of international films . The television magazine Prisma described the film as an “idiosyncratic homage to the 100th birthday of cinema”. The director Agnès Varda gives the viewer "a very personal, but extremely humorous and ironic insight into film history" and is supported by a cast that is made up of almost everything "that is well-known in the international film business".
Awards
Hundred and One Nights took part in the competition for the Golden Bear at the 1995 Berlinale , but lost to Bertrand Tavernier's The Decoy .
