Árpád Fazekas [ ˈaːrpaːd ˈfɒzɛkɒʃ ] (born June 23, 1930 in Kámon (now part of Szombathely ); † August 10, 2018 ) was a Hungarian football goalkeeper .
Career
Árpád Fazekas first played two seasons for Budapesti Dózsa SE in 1953 and 1954 , before he also played two seasons with Budapesti Vörös Lobogó SE in the Nemzeti Bajnokság , the highest Hungarian league, in 1955 and 1956 . He didn't play a single game in 1956 because he was banned for a year after western money ($ 10) was found in his apartment, a serious crime at the time. While his ban was still in place, the '56 Revolution occurred in Hungary , which led him to flee and prematurely ended his career in Hungary.
For the club he also played two first round matches in the European Cup .
National team
In 1955 he was called up for the first time in the Hungarian national team, where he came to a total of five missions in the same year. His competitors here were mainly Imre Danka from Pécsi Dózsa SE and Lajos Faragó from Honved Budapest .
As part of the hosting of the European Cup national soccer teams 1955-60 , the sixth event of the forerunner of the 1960 European Championship , he played three games. He made his debut on September 17 in Lausanne in a 5-4 win over Switzerland . On October 2, he won with his team in Prague 3-1 against the selection of Czechoslovakia and on October 16, 1955 in Budapest 6-1 against the selection of Austria .
In the meantime he achieved a 1-1 draw with his team in Budapest on September 25 against the selection of the Soviet Union ; Ferenc Puskás scored the equalizer in the 87th minute with a penalty . He played his last international match on November 13 in a 4-2 win against Sweden in front of 90,000 spectators at Budapest's Népstadion .
Years in Germany and Belgium
After the Hungarian uprising , Fazekas fled to Germany and joined FC Bayern Munich in September 1957 . He made his debut in the Oberliga Süd on October 27, 1957 (12th matchday) in a 4-1 win against the Stuttgarter Kickers in the stadium on Grünwalder Strasse ; he fended off the penalty kicked by Horst Ritter in the 60th minute . With him, FC Bayern Munich won the national club cup for the first time on December 29, 1957 in Augsburg . He gave his last performance at Bayerntor on May 16, 1961, when the then leading team in the world, Pelés FC Santos, also stopped at Grünwalder Strasse on a European tour and won there 3-2.
After four seasons and 100 league games for Bayern, he moved to season 1961/62 for KSV Hessen Kassel in the 2nd Oberliga Süd , before 1962 after Belgium to first division club Anderlecht moved. There he played 13 league games by 1964 - including five games in the 1962/63 European Cup . In his last season he won the championship with the team, but was no longer used. A protracted knee injury forced him to retire at the age of 34.
Others
In the club's internal election of FC Bayern Munich's “eleven of the century” in 2005, the Hungarian finished fifth among the goalkeepers behind Sepp Maier , Oliver Kahn , Raimond Aumann and Jean-Marie Pfaff . He died in Budapest on August 10, 2018 at the age of 88. The year before, he was in Munich at a meeting of the 1957 cup winners.
