format
From January 1957, regionally divided according to the division of the upper leagues, de facto club cup competitions took place in which the respective upper and second division clubs were entitled to participate. The winners - with the exception of the South German and Berlin winners, who held a qualifying game against each other here - played the finalists in two semi-finals.
The games
Way of FC Bayern Munich in southern Germany
The formerly financially rather tight FC Bayern originally wanted to forego participating in the 1957 DFB Cup, as the competition was not considered attractive and the club feared that they would not even recoup the travel expenses. The Austrian coach of Bayern, Willibald Hahn , was ultimately able to convince the club management to start. The Oberliga South Season 1956/57 included the Bayern way, mid May 1957, only four points above the relegation zone in 10th place ranking from.
For games that were tied after extra time, repetitions were scheduled.

final
Fortuna was considered a favorite, especially since they eliminated the Hamburg championship finalists in 1957, who were seen as quite strong in the semifinals. But after the field was covered with snow on the day of the game, many thought that this would help Bayern. So it happened. The goal of the day was scored by Rudi Jobst ten minutes before the end , who overcame Albert Görtz in the Fortuna goal, the best man in his eleven, in the third margin . National coach Sepp Herberger later commented on the goalscorer: "Jobst, whom I saw playing for the first time in Augsburg, delivered an excellent game. He was Bayern's playmaker."
