At the age of 21, Knauer was a member of the TSV 1860 Munich squad , for which he played 16 times without scoring for the first time in the Oberliga Süd , the top German division at the time, from the 1952/53 season and - due to the poor performance - in the 2. Oberliga Süd had to relegate.

For the 1953/54 season he was obliged by the league competitor FC Bayern Munich , for which he only played a friendly game in his first season.

In the following season he played 17 point games in the Oberliga Süd, in which he was twice successful as a goalscorer. He was also used in all three games for the DFB Cup , including the 1-0 final against Fortuna Düsseldorf on December 29, 1957 in the Augsburger Rosenaustadion . Previously, he was used in six games in the competition for the South German Cup , including the final won 4-1 on May 26, 1957 against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 . His last league game he played on April 9, 1961 (27th matchday) in the 2: 3 defeat in the home game against Kickers Offenbach .
