career

Bremer SV, 1951 to 1955

The trained electrician Herbert Bayer came in the spring of 1951 from Saxony from SG Hartha to Northern Germany to Bremer SV in the Oberliga Nord. In May 1951, the Bavarian, who played predominantly as a right wing runner or half right, played his first two appearances for Bremen in the 1950/51 round against Eimsbütteler TV and Eintracht Braunschweig . He experienced his first derby as an active player in the second half of the 1951/52 series on January 13, 1952 in a 1-1 draw in front of 28,000 spectators against Werder Bremen . As a right connector he acted alongside center forward Erich Hänel , who had made three appearances in the German national soccer team with Hartha in 1939. After the fourth round Oberliga Nord , 1954/55, Bremer SV rose one point behind VfL Wolfsburg , Göttingen 05 and SV Arminia Hannover from the Oberliga. Bayer had played in all 30 games of the round. After relegation, the ex-Hartha player moved to the 1955/56 round at VfB Oldenburg . From 1951 to 1955 he had played 106 games with nine goals for Bremer SV.

In Oldenburg he met Erich Hänel again and repeated his personal record of the previous year with 30 appearances and three goals. But he also experienced the second descent in a row; the VfB Oldenburg rose together with the Eimsbütteler TV in 1956 from the Oberliga Nord. For the round 1956/57 Bayer signed a contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf and moved to the Oberliga West.

Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1956 to 1963

With coach Kuno Klötzer and teammates Jupp Derwall , Erich Juskowiak and Matthias Mauritz , Fortuna placed sixth in the west in the 1956/57 season. After winning the West German Cup on June 19, 1957 in Duisburg against Wuppertaler SV , the 1-0 victory in Hanover against Hamburger SV in the semifinals led to the entry into the DFB Cup final in 1957 in Augsburg against FC Bayern Munich . Herbert Bayer held the position of right runner in each case. Bayern Munich won the final with a 1-0 win. Fortuna defended the cup title in the west on June 27, 1958 in Wuppertal with a 4-1 victory against 1. FC Cologne . In the semifinals of the following DFB Cup, Düsseldorf prevailed with 2-1 goals against Tasmania 1900 Berlin, Bayer was in the game as a side runner. In the final of 1958, on November 16 in Kassel, he was not used. When Fortuna Düsseldorf only narrowly failed to make it into the final round of the German football championship in the 1958/59 round (tied behind runner-up 1. FC Köln as third in the table), with 89 goals, Bayer had made 21 appearances . In his fourth year in Düsseldorf, 1959/60, Fortuna sensationally relegated to the 2nd division West , from which she immediately returned to the top division with coach Fritz Pliska . Bayer played 22 games for Fortuna in the 2nd division West. In the last year of the Oberliga era, 1962/63, when Jupp Derwall was now the coach, Fortuna's face had changed radically. Herbert Bayer had another 15 missions alongside his teammates Hans-Josef Hellingrath , Manfred Krafft , Peter Meyer and Hermann Straschitz . In the summer of 1963, the 36-year-old ended his league career after 117 appearances for Fortuna Düsseldorf.
