action

Félix de Sisteron grew up without parents. Although he cannot read, he has a preciously designed book in which the story of the red dragon is written. This, who is actually called Guillaume de Montauban, once saved his friend Raoul from the fire of the dragon. His skin burned, but he survived. Since then he has been notorious as a Knight of the Red Dragon and it is said that although he wishes to die every day, death avoids him. Félix's big wish is to get to know Guillaume. He is all the more appalled when he hears that he was killed in a slaughter by the knight Mespoulède not far from his resting place. The background is an instruction from the Pope, from whom his lover, the poet Hugues de Pertuys, escaped and who offered a bounty for his recovery. Both Guillaume and Mespoulède want the money. The supposedly dead Guillaume is actually only injured. Félix joins his service. Guillaume is following Mespoulède's heels. He tracked down Hugues de Pertuys in a monastery and captured him. A little later he set the castle of Guillaume's father, the Duc de Belzince, on his way. Guillaume also arrives here later. His father shows him Raoul de Ventadour, whom Guillaume had once rescued and who had disappeared in the forest for years. Now Belzince's men discovered him and brought him back. Raoul has become mad. Guillaume doesn't want to see him and doesn't want to take care of him either. Nevertheless, Raoul succeeds in following Guillaume and Félix. At night, Raoul von Félix's eyes turns into a wild boar. Guillaume tells Félix that he once killed Raoul's wife. Since then, Raoul has been so obsessed. Guillaume rides on alone the next day to find Hugues de Pertuys.

Félix and Raoul meet the nun Gisela von Bingen on their way. She has fled the monastery and only begins to speak when she gets into dire straits. Félix and Raoul save them, but are ambushed by Mespoulède, as a result of which they are all thrown into a river. It is Guillaume who saves them. During the night, Gisela also experiences Raoul's transformation. She reads Félix in his book and learns several things about Guillaume: He is condemned never to marry. In addition, the fire drove him crazy in his youth: Although it only burned his skin on the outside, it continues to burn inside. In fact, a little later, Félix sees Guillaume fighting an imaginary wild boar in vain as he tries to kill Raoul in order to find peace of mind. The next morning the group is found again by Mespoulède. Gisela has disappeared, and with her Hugues de Pertuys. It turns out that they are both married and Gisela is heavily pregnant. She gives birth in the forest. Guillaume, in turn, takes Hugues de Pertuys prisoner. The group makes their way to the Pope, who is holding a ceremony on a beach. Shortly before they meet, Guillaume stops to visit the grave of Raoul's wife Isabelle de Ventadour, which is not far away. At the grave he asks Isabelle's apparition to relieve Raoul from his curse, but Isabelle refuses. Félix uses Guillaume's absence to free Hugues de Pertuys and Gisela. Hugues manages to escape and Guillaume now takes Gisela hostage and appears with her in front of the Pope, who is not very impressed. Gisela is held captive in a tent. Félix and Raoul manage to free Gisela together. Raoul is killed in the process. A little later Guillaume finds the seriously injured Félix on the beach, who also dies at his side. Half-mistakenly Guillaume also asks for death, but it does not overtake him. Instead, he meets Mespoulèdes once more, who has Gisela and Hugues in his power. Guillaume is able to help both of them to escape and begins his last great fight against Mespoulèdes. It takes a long time and brings both men to the limit of their strength. The narrator concludes that no one knows what happened to Guillaume. However, you can see him at the grave of Isabelle, Raoul and Félix and it is said that Guillaume visits his friends' graves every day.

reception

After Stumme Schreie, it was the second feature film by director Hélène Angel, who did not aim for a realistic portrait of the Middle Ages in The Red Knight Templar - Red Knight . Rather, she mixed elements of the Middle Ages with elements of fairy tales and legends and understood the search for the immortal knight as a timeless search. This caused mixed reactions from the critics. L'Express asked : “An ambitious knight's fairy tale or a failed epic? Opinions differ. "(" Un conte chevaleresque ambitieux ou une épopée ratée. Avis partagés "), and the film-dienst classified it as a" mixture of knight film and dark fairy tale ", which was" developed with top-class actors beyond all genre conventions " be a. He also found that "the fantastic camera work, imaginative costumes and overwhelming landscapes [...] give the film a perfect touch."
