Bernhard Gál (born November 19, 1971 in Vienna - Leopoldstadt ) is an Austrian composer and installation artist .

Life

Bernhard Gál works as a transdisciplinary composer, artist and musicologist. Depending on the context, his works are presented in exhibitions, concerts and art projects in public spaces. Gal became known, among other things, through his numerous works in the field of sound art , in which he combines sound with light, objects, spatial concepts or video projections. He also composes music for acoustic instruments as well as electroacoustic music. Gal runs the label “Gromoga Records” and directs the Austrian cultural platform “sp ce”. Since 2006 he has curated the interdisciplinary festival "shut up and listen!" Together with Ernst Reitermaier. Gál lives in Vienna and Berlin , where he also taught sound art at the University of the Arts from 2006-07 .

Bernhard Gál's works have been presented in exhibitions, concerts and installations in Europe, Asia, North and South America and performed by ensembles such as China Found Music Workshop Taiwan, NewTon-Ensemble Vienna, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Ensemble Noamnesia Chicago and Ensemble Alter Ego. An important element of his work is the connection of music with other art forms such as architecture , visual arts , dance , theater , performance , video and media art. Among other things, he has been working with the Japanese architect and artist Yumi Kori since 1997 (“Audio- architectural installations ”). As a laptop musician, he also regularly gives concerts himself.

For his music and art projects, Gál has received the Karl Hofer Prize Berlin, an annual grant from the DAAD's Berlin artist program, and the Austrian state grant for composition. His music has been published on several CDs, such as Durian (A), Plate Lunch (D), Intransitive (USA), Bremsstrahlung (USA), Klanggalerie (A), Gromoga (A) and Charhizma (A). The catalog book "Installations" was published by Kehrer Verlag Heidelberg in summer 2005, in which Gál's sound installations and intermedia works of the last few years are comprehensively documented. Another book and DVD was published in November 2015 for the documentation of intermedial works 2005–2015 (Zwischenbrücken, edition sp ce / Gromoga).
