Johann Gänsbacher

Johann Baptist Gänsbacher (born May 8, 1778 in Sterzing , † July 13, 1844 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer , conductor and Kapellmeister .

Life

In his childhood and youth he was a choirboy in Innsbruck and in Hall with Joseph Alois Holzmann , later in Bozen . In Innsbruck he began to study philosophy and law at the end of the 18th century before studying composition with Georg Joseph Vogler and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Antonio Salieri in Vienna and Darmstadt from 1801 .

In the years 1806 to 1810 longer trips followed, which he a. a. led to Prague , Dresden , Mannheim and Heidelberg . During this time he made acquaintances with well-known composers of his time, including Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer . Gänsbacher stayed in Franzensbad from August 2nd to 9th, 1810 . In the “list of spa guests and bathers who have arrived”, Darmstadt is given as the origin . He then worked as a composer and music teacher. In 1813 he entered the military and in 1815 initiated the military music of the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger.

In 1823 he was appointed cathedral music director at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna . He held this position until his death in 1844.

His compositional work includes masses , requiem , vespers , litanies and chamber music as well as songs , vocal and instrumental works. Gänsbacher composed both secular and sacred music, although during his position as cathedral music director he almost exclusively created church music. There are also some commissioned compositions among his early works. During his time in the military, he also created works for brass music, mainly marches . The number of his compositions is in the hundreds.

He rests in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 0, Row 1, Number 61), next to his son Josef Gänsbacher , where he was transferred from the Sankt Marxer Friedhof . In 1894, Gänsbachergasse was named after him in Vienna- Landstrasse (3rd district) and Simmering (11th district) .

His most important student was the Tyrolean composer Josef Netzer .
