Giuseppe Bonno

Giuseppe Bonno (born January 29, 1711 in Vienna ; † April 15, 1788 ibid) - baptized Josephus Johannes Baptista Bonno in St. Stephen's Church - was an Austrian composer .

Life

His father, Lucretius Bonno, was a native Italian and served as a runner in the imperial service. The son received his first training as a choirboy at St. Stephen's Cathedral from the organist and conductor Johann Georg Reinhardt (1676–1742) there. He then continued his studies with Francesco Durante and Leonardo Leo in Naples. He returned to Vienna after ten years and was Kapellmeister at the court of the Prince of Saxony-Hildburghausen from 1750 to 1760 . After Florian Gassmann's death , he was Kapellmeister of the Vienna Court Orchestra from 1774 until his retirement in 1788 . His successor was Antonio Salieri .

In contrast to his current level of fame, Bonno was an important figure in Viennese musical life during his lifetime, and his works were performed frequently. He created the majority of his compositions, including four oratorios and around 30 masses, for church use. He also wrote around 20 works for the stage, including some in direct collaboration with the Vienna-based librettist Pietro Metastasio, such as L'eroe cinese and L'isola disabitata (both 1752), and L'Atenaide ossia Gli affetti generosi (1762).

Stylistically, his works can be classified between those of the Venetian late baroque by Antonio Caldara and Johann Joseph Fux and the classical works by Christoph Willibald Gluck and Joseph Haydn , but also shaped by his longer stay in Naples.
