La danza (German: "The Dance") is a libretto for a cantata drammatica for two voices by Pietro Metastasio . It was performed for the first time in April 1744 in the setting by Giuseppe Bonno by a lady-in-waiting and a nobleman ("da una Dama, e da un Cavaliere") in the Hofburg in Vienna .

The two characters of the play are the amorous nymph Nice and the jealous shepherd boy Tirsi. In order for their love to be kept secret, Nice has to go to the ball without him. Tirsi says goodbye to her in an exaggerated way: “You gods know / Centuries fulfill my complaints / Only moments my jubilation!” (“Oh Dio! / Son secoli i miei pianti; / Le mie felicità son semper istanti”). Nice assures him of her love and loyalty, but still Tirsi cannot suppress his jealousy: “Can a fearful heart suppress its pounding, / When false longing storms always shower his gem? / May give such hearts, mine is not strong enough. "(" Ma chi potrebbe / Veder tranquillo al suo tesoro intorno / Semper alcun altro insidiator novello? / Ah, se v'é, chi può farlo, io non son quello. " ) Nice means that she is not really as beautiful as he sees her. But he could be proud if others recognized their value. However, Tirsi fears that she might reciprocate the admiration of the others, even if she does not notice it herself immediately. When she doesn't know how to calm him down, he asks her forgiveness and asks her to leave, because he now wants to trust her. Still, he fails to let go of her hand. Once again he wants to hear from her that she loves him. The work ends with a mutual love duet: "For you alone / Gods gave her - the sighs for me." ("Per te solo / sola / Io son nat ... as sospirar")

history

Metastasio himself saw this work only as a small casual work, as is evident from a letter to Farinelli . It has no real dramatic plot, but only consists of a short conversation in which Metastasio - as in some earlier works - works out the differences between words and feelings. The generic term “cantata” is somewhat misleading here. Until the 17th century it was still used for all types of vocal music. Only in the course of time did today's meaning develop in the sense of a small singing performance without stage design or costumes, which was written for the concert hall and not for the theater. However, in the 17th century there was another widely used type, very popular particularly in the Neapolitan School and in France, which was close to a small opera. These works have a clearly distinctive scenic character. Most of the works that Metastasios called “cantata”, as well as La danza, belong to this type .
