Tomasz Bugaj

Tomasz Bugaj (born February 11, 1950 in Kłomnice ) is a Polish conductor and music teacher .

Bugaj attended the piano class of Wacława Sakowicz at the State Music School in Częstochowa until 1969 , studied conducting with Stanisław Wisłocki at the Warsaw Music Academy and musicology at the University of Warsaw from 1969 to 1974 . After graduating, he worked at the Warsaw Chamber Opera , first as deputy conductor of Kazimierz Kord , Jerzy Maksymiuk and Jürgen Jürgens , then as conductor and finally as artistic director: with the opera he undertook numerous tours through Europe and the United States.

In 1978 he won first prize at the Bristol International Conducting Competition and performed with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta over the next few years . In Poland he was artistic director of the Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz from 1980 to 1984 , of the Filharmonia Łódzka from 1987 to 1990 and of the Krakow Philharmonic from 1998 to 2005 . From 2006 to 2008 he worked as music director at Teatr Wielki in Warsaw . As a guest conductor he worked with the National Philharmonic in Warsaw , the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Polish Chamber Orchestra as well as at the opera houses in Łódź, Poznan and Gdansk.

He has conducted many well-known orchestras in Europe, the USA and South America (including the Orquesta Nacional de España , the National Chamber Orchestra , the Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile and several times the Orchestra of the Mozarteum in Salzburg), performed in large concert halls and theaters such as the Berliner Schauspielhaus , the Grieghallen in Bergen, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Liederhalle in Stuttgart, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg and the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on and has been a guest at international festivals such as the Festival de Asturias , the Bath International Festival of Music and Arts , the Berlin Festival , the Festspillene i Bergen , the Carinthian Summer , the Cheltenham International Festival of Music and the Istanbul International Festival .

From 1997 to 2005 he taught conducting at the Kraków Music Academy , and since 2003 he has been Professor of Conducting at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
