Emil Berlanda

Emil Berlanda (born December 6, 1905 in Kufstein ; † September 21, 1960 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian composer .

Life

Emil Berlanda attended secondary school in Innsbruck and entered civil service in 1922 and later graduated. From 1912 he practiced the piano with Wenzel Skop in Innsbruck. He attended the conservatory in Innsbruck to study piano and music theory with Emil Schennich . In 1926 he passed the Kapellmeister examination under Joseph Marx at the Vienna University of Music . As an autodidact he was an organist . On August 21, 1938 he gave a concert on the Kufstein Heldenorgel .

Emil Berlanda was choirmaster at the Jesuit Church in Innsbruck from 1932 . After Austria was annexed to Hitler's Germany, he became a member of the NSDAP on May 1, 1938 . Josef Eduard Ploner and Karl Senn , like him members of the Association of Tyrolean Composers, had already taken an oath on Adolf Hitler in 1937 during the prohibition period. His main career as a composer was during the Nazi era. From 1938 onwards his health was limited by multiple sclerosis and in 1950 he stopped composing. In 1950 he finished his compositional work with Opus 51 Des Lebens Vergänlichkeit , a solo cantata for soprano and string orchestra and piano. Then worked at the University of Innsbruck as a lecturer for harmony .

Emil Berlanda was married to Magdalena Berlanda, who, at the suggestion of Othmar Costa, founded the Emil Berlanda Prize for Music, which was awarded for the first time in 1981.
