Jörg Birkenkötter

Jörg Birkenkötter (born May 19, 1963 in Dortmund ) is a German composer .

Life

Birkenkötter studied composition (with Nicolaus A. Huber ) and piano at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen and in postgraduate studies composition with Helmut Lachenmann at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart .

After various teaching assignments, he held a substitute professorship for composition at the Frankfurt / Main University of Music in 2002 , a visiting professorship at Hansei University in 2005/06 and the head of a composition master class at Yonsei University in Seoul , Korea . Since 2011 he has been Professor of Composition at the University of the Arts Bremen .

He has been married to the pianist Hwa-Kyung Yim since 1986 .

Jörg Birkenkötter mainly writes orchestral and chamber music, vocal works only take up a small space. His works can be understood as "an always new offer for reflection". Consciously standing in the tradition of European art music, he combines this tradition with the expanded sound spectrum of current music. “That integrative trait that creates new connections” is characteristic of his work.
