history

The Webb Institute of Naval Architecture was founded in 1889 by William Henry Webb , a US ship designer and philanthropist . William H. Webb had operated a shipyard in New York City for decades and was later a founding member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers . The first grade of the Webb Institute graduated from college in 1893.

New York architect Arthur P. Jennings was hired to design a corresponding building for the facility. Construction began in the Bronx in 1890 on land on a cliff overlooking the Harlem and Hudson Rivers . Brownstone was used as the building material . The building in the neo-Romanesque style was completed in 1893.

Moves to Stevenson Taylor Hall

During the Second World War , the Webb Institute was used by the United States Navy as a training facility for their officers. In November 1945, the Webb Institute acquired a new building for their facility, which was originally called The Braes . This was the former estate of the American businessman Herbert L. Pratt , which was built between 1912 and 1914 in the neo-Jacobin style . The Braes was designed by the architect James Brite and built in Glen Cove on the north coast of the Long Islands . The building replaced the Webb Institute's original headquarters in the Bronx, which was sold and later converted into an apartment complex.

In April 1947, classes began for the first time on the new compound in Glen Cove. The building had been renovated and rebuilt accordingly. In honor of the former President of the Board of Trustees was The Braes in Stevenson Taylor Hall renamed. Since 1974 women have also been admitted as students.
