Cryptic Studios is an American company that develops massively multiplayer online role-playing games . The company was founded in June 2000 and is based in Los Gatos , California . On April 28, 2004, NCsoft released the company's first game under the name City of Heroes and on October 31, 2005, the successor City of Villains . City of Villains is both a standalone game and an expansion to City of Heroes .

On December 9, 2008, Atari announced that it would acquire Cryptic Studios for $ 28 million plus success-based bonuses of up to $ 20 million. In 2009 a new online game called Champions Online was released , which is based on the pen and paper role-playing game Champions . On February 2, 2010, Star Trek Online was an MMORPG in the Star Trek universe . On August 23, 2010 the development of the MMORPG Neverwinter based on the D&D license was announced.

On August 9, 2011, Atari announced that Cryptic Studios had been sold to the Chinese publisher Perfect World for 35 million euros.
