Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation is a board game developed by BKOM Studios for Windows and Mac OS with strategy and role-playing aspects . It is based on the D&D Adventure System, a set of rules for board games in the role-playing universe Dungeons & Dragons . It was released on October 11, 2017, the board game version of WizKids was released on October 18, 2017.

Gameplay

In Tales from Candlekeep is a software version of a same strategy board game with role-playing aspects, which in turn is based on a role-playing adventure 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. The narrative background is the conspiracy of the undead Lich Acererak, who tries to conjure up a killing curse in his hiding place in the jungle of the Chult peninsula ( Forgotten Realms ), which is supposed to subjugate the entire world. A group of adventurers has to defeat him under certain time pressure and lift the killing curse.

The player can choose between four or five characters with whom he can undertake the adventure individually or as a group. The figures cannot be created individually. As usual in the D&D regulations, they have specified different classes and races and therefore also differ in their skills:

  • Artus Cimber - human / ranger
  • Asharra - Aarakocra / magician
  • Birdsong - Tabaxi / Bard
  • Dragonbait - Sauriel / Paladin
  • Qawasha - Human / Druid (originally as a separately published, paid download extension)

On a world map, the player can choose different starting points and complete missions. There are more than 30 main and side quests to choose from.

The mission game world appears in 3D graphics, the player looks at the game from an isometric perspective . The card consists of square fields that are randomly assembled from a given set of building blocks. The game is divided into four phases for each hero turn. In the "hero phase" all character-specific actions are carried out, e.g. B. attacks, spells, movement, opening chests, etc. In the subsequent “discovery phase”, new adjacent fields are revealed when one of your own pawns has approached the border to a previously undiscovered field sufficiently. This is followed by the "villain phase", in which it is the opposing pieces' turn. The increasing number of opponents over time creates a form of time pressure in which the missions should be completed. Should no new field be revealed or should the player come across a field with a challenge, he triggers an "encounter phase". Random events occur here, which in most cases have a negative effect on the game for the player.

The characters have three types of abilities: At-will abilities are available in each round, the more powerful daily and utility abilities usually only once a day, whereby the latter can occasionally be recharged with looted items. With the help of the gold and materials collected in the quests, the heroes' equipment can also be upgraded between missions.

development

The game was announced in September 2017. Development partner for license holders Wizards of the Coast and its parent company Hasbro was the developer studio BKOM from Quebec , which specializes in turn-based strategy games . It is an adaptation of the D&D Adventure System for board games. BKOM's Vice-President Fred Tremblay praised them for their quick entry into the D&D world without the time-consuming preparations that are usual for role-playing games. This would lend itself to a short, well-portioned gaming experience. The software implementation, in turn, bypasses the problem if no other players are available. In doing so, the impression should be avoided that the player in a board game is merely playing against a computer opponent instead of human players. Instead, the game should give the player the feeling of being in the center of the action.

After publication, five download extensions were released:

  • Artus Cimber's Explorer Pack
  • Asharra's Diplomat Pack
  • Birdsong's Entertainer Pack
  • Dragonbait's Dungeoneer Pack
  • Qawasha the Human Druid

“A large disappointment for me was the lack of multiplayer and I can only hope a new game is created with the same system with multiplayer added in. It was the one big thing missing that would have fully brought the experience home for me. Controlling four heroes yourself IS fun but I can only imagine the chaos and hilarity that would ensue from getting three other friends at adventure with voice chat - or better yet three strangers! "

“Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation sticks true to its board game roots, almost to its detriment. The same issues from the board game rear their ugly bright yellow Tonka truck heads here, too. The encounter phase works to inhibit players rather than empower them, and every newly discovered tile feels like a punishment […]. For its price point, the game is solid. Despite my gripes with its reactive playstyle, it is still a great deal of fun. "

“Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation stays close to its board game roots, almost to its disadvantage. The same problems of the board game show their ugly faces here too. The encounter phase inhibits the player more than it strengthens him, and every newly discovered field feels like a punishment [...]. For its price, the game is solid. Despite my complaints about the reactive style of play, it's still a lot of fun. "
