Lords of Waterdeep is a strategy board game developed by Peter Lee and Rodney Thompson and published by Wizards of the Coast in 2012 . It takes place in Tiefwasser (English Waterdeep ), a fictional city of the campaign world of the forgotten realms of the role-playing game rules Dungeons & Dragons . The players act on behalf of one of the masked rulers of deep water. By using spies and hiring adventurers for quests, they try to increase their influence on the city. In 2013, an expansion with the title Scoundrels of Skullport and, in cooperation with the developer Playdek, a computer game implementation of the base game for iOS devices were published.

description

Lords of Waterdeep is a strategy game for 2–5 people. Thematically, the game revolves around a competition for dominance over the city. Each player is represented by a color, which symbolizes an interest group known from the role-playing rules:

  • Yellow: Knights of the shield (Engl. Knights of the Shield )
  • Black: City Guard (engl. City Guard )
  • Blue: Silver Stars (. Engl Silver Stars )
  • Green: Harper (. English Harper )
  • Red: The red sashes (Engl. Red Sashes )

Each player is also on behalf of a masked lord of deep water, one of the rival, mysterious rulers of the city. Which one this is is determined by the face-down assignment of a special lord card and influences the further course of the game and the end of the game.

The game board shows a map of the city. The game lasts a total of eight rounds and consists mainly of placing pieces in turn at the various locations in the city. The player uses his agents to carry out actions such as collecting money, buying buildings, hiring adventurers (differentiated into fighters, magicians, villains and clerics), drawing or playing intrigue cards or accepting a quest. The aim is to earn victory points, for example by completing quests. In order to achieve his goal, the player needs a mixture of intrigue, negotiation skills and combat.

There are a total of five different quest types (Piety, Arcana, Skullduggery, Commerce and Warfare) for which the player has to hire adventurers with the help of an agent. Fulfilling quests increases the influence of the respective lord and gives the player a permanent advantage or victory points. Each lord rewards certain types of quests, the fulfillment of specific tasks or the sovereignty over certain buildings again separately with bonus points, which are only paid out at the end of the game when the lord card is revealed.

Other players can be sabotaged with the help of the intrigue cards. There are three types: Attack, Utility or Mandatory Quests. Attack and utility cards ensure that resources and victory points are distributed or lost. Mandatory quests force the affected player to carry out this quest before all other quests and thus hinder the course of the game.

After the eighth round, the game ends with the count. The lord cards are revealed and the associated special victory points are paid out. Additional victory points are also awarded for gold and adventurers. The player with the most victory points wins.

marketing

So far, the game has only been published in English. For promotional purposes, Wizards of the Coast released two promo cards: Inevitable Betrayal (distributed at Dungeons & Dragons Experience Con 2012) and Rapid Expansion (distributed at Gen Con 2013). In August 2013, an extensive game expansion called Scoundrels of Skullport came on the market.

Scoundrels of Skullport (expansion)

Scoundrels of Skullport is the first official expansion for Lords of Waterdeep and was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2013.

With Scoundrels of Skullport , the number of players will be increased to six, and the new group will now be Die Graue Hand ( The Gray Hands ). The expansion consists of two modules, each of which adds a new play area to the game, Unterberg ( Undermountain ) and Skullport . Both modules can be used individually or together with the main game. If both modules are used, adapted rules for a longer game are also used.

With Unterberg, resources such as gold or adventurers can also be placed on the game board. If a player occupies this field with an agent, he receives not only the regular action but also the resource placed there. With Skull Harbor, corruption is introduced as a new game mechanic. In return for particularly valuable actions in the new areas, the player receives corruption points. At the end of the game, they deduct points from the player, but can be redistributed or their negative value reduced through various actions.

- Matt Thrower : PocketGamer UK

“These are just minor gripes, though, and they do very little to diminish the fine game in front of me. This is a well-designed board game that's been converted with care, and so long as you're not resting your hopes entirely on playing against the mean old AI, any fan of strategy or board games would do well to give Lords of Waterdeep a look. "

“However, these are only minor complaints and they hardly diminish this fine game in front of me. This is a well-designed board game that has been converted with care, and unless you put all your hopes in the game against the evil old AI, any strategy or board game fan would be well advised to check out Lords of Waterdeep.
