Gnolls are fictional creatures that are mostly described as human-like hyenas .

Originally created in the spelling Gnole by Lord Dunsany , the gnolls first appeared in this spelling through the pen & paper role-playing games of the Dungeons & Dragons series, which is actually one of the many printing errors in the first edition of Dungeons - & - Dragons set of rules (Lord Dunsany was mentioned as Lord Sunsany ), but nevertheless prevailed.

The name Gnole or Gnoll alludes to a cross between gnomes and trolls . The current dominant representation of the gnolls as humanoid hyena-like creatures was only created with the publication of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual in 1977. They are mostly described as barbaric and aggressive, but gifted with a certain intelligence and even language skills (for example Terry Pratchett).
