Metin2 is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that was released in 2005 by the Korean company Ymir Entertainment Co. Ltd. has been published. The German company Gameforge sells the game in 19 countries (including Germany , Great Britain , Greece , Italy , Canada , Mexico , Turkey , the USA , United Arab Emirates, etc.). In addition, versions in Brazil , China , Japan , the Philippines and Singapore are distributed by different publishers. The German version of Metin2 currently offers four servers.

While more than 8 million players were active worldwide in August 2010, in July 2012 there were only around 6 million.

history

The game started in Korea and China in March 2005 and was successful there from the start. On December 17, 2006 it was released as the first European version in Germany, where it was initially still in beta and paid for. In May 2007, the monthly fees were abolished and the game was also released in other language versions. In Europe alone it now has over 8,000,000 players. More than five times as many accounts are registered. Since the abolition of regular fees in May 2007, the game has been financed by micropayments .

At the end of January 2009, Metin2 made headlines with a special kind of criminal complaint: A 45-year-old user from Germany lost all of his avatar's items in which he had already invested more than 1,000 euros. He filed a complaint against unknown persons. The search for the culprit is likely to turn out to be difficult, since the theft of virtual objects is not regulated by law and since crime within online games had not previously occurred in Germany. However, if it is not a gamble, but theft and the hacking of the account, the offender faces up to two years in prison. A report on this case was even broadcast on RTL Aktuell. The case was cleared up at the beginning of April: an acquaintance of the victim had registered under his ID and transferred the items to himself.

On August 26th, 2009 there was one of the largest DDoS attacks on several servers of Gameforge , an operator of the game. According to community manager NRJ, a group from Romania is said to have attempted to crash the game server with massive attacks. The attack was successful; several language versions (including the British, Danish, German, French, Dutch, Spanish and Turkish versions) were not available for several hours.

From November 27, 2012 to November 29, 2012, the 26 existing German-language servers at that time were merged into seven new German-language servers.

At the beginning of February 2013, the developer Ymir Entertainment and Webzen Games announced that they would cease Korean gaming operations in March 2013, as they only wanted to concentrate on development in the future. In March 2013 it was also announced that the Canadian operator of the game, G4Box , would cease operations of the game. Players on their servers will be moved to two servers set up especially for them at the publisher Gameforge , which have a different game version than the European one.

On April 16, 2014, a new server was opened, the name of which can be set by a player as a reward.

On May 2, 2018, the seven former German servers were merged into two new servers. The event server Titania opened on June 22, 2018.

On June 16, 2019, another event server was opened under the name Rubinum. This server was named after a P server previously closed by Gameforge.

action

Metin2 is set in a fictional Far Eastern world that was once united by an empire. Only after the impact of a meteorite, the Metin stone, which made the flora and fauna wild, did the empire break up and split into three kingdoms - one in the west, one in the east and one in the south. The area in the middle and north of the continent is devastated and "neutral". The player now gets into one of the three realms (Chunjo, Jinno or Shinsoo), and the goal is to appease the wild animals again and to destroy the meteorite.

Classes

In addition to his class (warrior, ninja, surah or shaman), each player has a "teaching", i.e. a specialization.

  • Warriors: Warriors are the most popular character class because they have the best balance of armor, attack strength and health.
Mental doctrine: This doctrine tries to neutralize the enemy attacks with the help of a very strong defense. This teaching also does heavy skill damage.
Body theory: The body warrior tries to defeat his opponents as quickly as possible using his high attack value. In doing so, however, he accepts to receive increased damage himself.
  • Ninja: The ninja is a professional killer, he works with poison and attacks from disguise. His skills are all offensive in nature. With a bow and arrow, he is the only class to do additional damage in long-range combat.
Melee doctrine: The melee ninja tries to defeat his opponent using close-range attacks and poison. He can use stealth to optimize his damage. This means that other players cannot see him until he attacks.
Ranged combat: The long-range ninja fights his opponents with a bow and arrow. It should be noted, however, that his skills lose considerable damage as the distance increases.
  • Surah: Surah are magic fighters, they mainly rely on their skills. They are the second most popular class after the warriors, not least because of their relatively strong skills.
Magic theory: The Magiesura mainly relies on magical attacks and can absorb higher damage through its mysterious protection. In a 1: 1 fight against other players (PvP - player versus player) he is extremely strong, but has weaknesses with a large number of opponents and is therefore difficult to level (PvE - player versus environment).
Weapon doctrine: The weapon sura can be seen as a mixture of both warrior doctrines. In addition, in PvP (player versus player) he can considerably weaken the opponent with the help of a spell, which makes him a class that should not be underestimated. In the high-end, the Waffensura is a very balanced character.
  • Shaman: The shamans are a more demanding class than the others, which is why they are not played as often. Since they have somewhat weaker attack skills and therefore stronger support skills, they are often called "buffers" (support wizards). This means that they reinforce other characters in the game with reinforcement spells and healing spells and are usually slower to advance themselves.
Dragon teaching: The dragon shaman can provide valuable support work within a group / guild through his reinforcement spells and / or through the skill damage. But it can also be played well alone.
Healing doctrine: The healing shaman can heal himself and his colleagues. The healing shaman has ranged attacks and can heal himself. This makes him a feared opponent in a duel. Like the magic sura, it has weaknesses in leveling (PvE - player versus environment).
  • Lycans: The Lycans are gigantic wolf creatures who once lost their human form due to an incurable virus and mutated into beasts. Their unbridled strength and strong instinct make them excellent hand-to-hand fighters. They do not shy away from conflict and are always looking for the way to the front.

In the European and American versions, with the exception of the Lycan, all classes can be played as both female and male characters. In the original Korean version, warriors and surah can only be played as male characters, shamans and ninja only as female characters.

Rich

  • Shinsoo: The southern empire under the leadership of Yoon-Yoing is mainly devoted to trade. A lively trade route has already been opened with the west, but military incidents are repeated with the east.
  • Jinno: The easternmost realm is ruled by Ee-Ryoong, the last natural descendant of the emperor. It is the most warlike of the three kingdoms and tries to expand its power only with military strength and with the help of its army to unite the empire again.
  • Chunjo: The theocratic empire in the west is ruled by spiritual leaders. The empire was founded by Yoon-Young, the cousin of the former emperor. The empire has repeatedly armed conflicts with the other empires, as it split off from the then still existing empire at an early stage and has been striving for sole rule ever since.

All empires differ in their geographical structure, but have no differences in terms of prices, opponents and non-player characters.

Graphics and gameplay

The graphics are kept quite simple, which in turn means lower hardware requirements and therefore makes the game accessible to a larger audience. The gameplay, in contrast to most online role-playing games, is also kept very trivial. There is only a very small number of quests, and most of them are similar to the simple "Kill this and that!" Even so, the game has potential as it can be improved quickly and effectively, and because it is free it attracts a large community.

Media presence and awards

"Graphically, the game is very reminiscent of World of Warcraft at first glance thanks to the comic-like graphics."

- PC Games, September 8, 2008

“Metin2 is online role-playing action at its best. A free MMORPG that takes away boredom. "

- Bravo Screenfun, February 13, 2008

"Metin2 is a well-designed online multiplayer role-playing game that does not require a paid subscription."

- c't, February 4, 2008

In addition, GIGA TV has already broadcast its own report on Metin2.

Using the example of Metin 2 , the Süddeutsche Zeitung showed payment models in online games in which players sell their personal information, and they are paid out in virtual game currencies for revealing their address data.

In one issue of the series “ Filings - Reporters fight for you” on Sat.1 criticized the micropayment system for online games using the example of Metin2, which can lead to high and confusing bills, especially for young people. The ZDF broadcast WISO criticized the fact that without purchases over a 900 number, the game would quickly become boring.
