The Trashmen was an American surf rock band formed in 1962 .

biography

The band was formed in Minneapolis in 1962 from the band Jim Thaxter & the Travelers, founded in 1959 . With their hit Surfin 'Bird, a combination of the pieces The Bird's the Word and Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow by the Doo-Wop vocal group The Rivingtons , with some crazy lines of text and distinctive drums, they reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964 . After the first edition of the single had identified the Trashmen as the authors of the piece, after detailed legal advice on subsequent pressings of the single The Rivingtons was named as the composer . Several cover versions of the title appeared in later years , including The Beach Boys and the Ramones , The Cramps and the German thrash metal band Sodom . The piece of music is also included in various films (for example in Full Metal Jacket , in Werner - Gekotzt wird later! And in Pink Flamingos ), in TV series (for example Family Guy ) and in computer games (for example in Battlefield Vietnam and in the preview from Magicka Vietnam ).

After the band broke up in 1967, there was a revival in 1982; the band then continued to play with the original line-up until Steve Wahrer's death in 1989. Tony Andreason's brother Mark, with whom the band still performed occasionally in the 1990s, took over the vacant position of drummer. In 2009 Mark Andreason was replaced as drummer by Robin Reed, the son of bassist Bob Reed. The band has been separated again since 2016.
