Annona mucosa , and mucus apple called, is a flowering plant in the family annonaceous (Annonaceae). It isvaluedas a food for its tasty fruitsand isgrown commerciallyin the tropics .

Common names

The fruit is best known today by its Brazilian common name Biribá . Other common names are Wild sugar apple (Engl.), Biribazeiro (Brazil), Mulato ( Colombia ), Babosa / Zambo ( Mexico ), Cachiman ( Guadeloupe , Puerto Rico ) and Aratiku .

Annona mucosa is a fast-growing tropical tree that reaches heights of up to 15 meters.

Four years pass between sowing and fruit ripening. The fruit is conical to heart-shaped, green when unripe and yellow when ripe. It weighs between 0.2 and 1 kg. The fruit peel is covered with spines, similar to that of the durian , but is softer. The spines gradually turn black on a ripe fruit. The fruit pulp is creamy and sweet with a citrus aroma . It contains numerous black, inedible seeds .

Occurrence

The original occurrence of Annona mucosa is in Veracruz, Mexico, as well as Chiapas, Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Hispaniola, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Guyana, Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and the Brazilian states of Acre, Amazonas, Bahia, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Para, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo.
