Faroald II (Spoleto)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Faroald II. (Also Faruald, Farwald ); († 728 ) was from 703/705 to 719/720 dux of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto .

Life

Faroald II was the son of the dux Transamund I of Spoleto. His mother was probably his wife, a daughter of King Grimoald .

In 703 or 705 Faroald II succeeded his deceased father as dux . Around 716 Faroald conquered the Byzantine naval port Classis without authorization , but had to evacuate it again at King Liutprand's orders . His son Transamund II revolted against him in 719/720, seized the ducat and banished Faroald to a monastery (literally: ... eumque clericum faciens .; "... and made him a clergyman").

Faroald's further fate is not known for certain. He is said to have withdrawn as a monk in the Benedictine abbey Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle north of Ferentillo , which he founded and sponsored , and died there in 728. Another legend reports that he rebuilt the Abbazia di Farfa for St. Thomas von Maurienne and entered the monastery as a monk as early as 720 after a vision of Mary . He is said to have died in this monastery on February 19, 728. He is venerated as a blessed on March 23rd .
