Karl Otto Hunziker

Karl Otto Hunziker (born August 13, 1841 in Zurich ; † May 23, 1909 in Kilchberg ZH ) was a Swiss professor of education and pastor . Along with Heinrich Morf, he is considered the most important Pestalozzi researcher of the 19th century.

biography

Karl Otto Hunziker was born as the son of Karl Rudolf Hunziker and Anna Barbara Schinz. The Hunziker family originally came from Bern, Karl Otto Hunziker became a citizen of Zurich-Unterstrass in 1890 .

In 1860, Hunziker enrolled at the University of Zurich , he studied theology and history and graduated on January 26, 1865. From 1867 to 1871 he was a pastor in Unterstrass, then a teacher of education and religious history at the teachers' seminar in Küsnacht . In 1875 he received a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Zurich. After his habilitation in 1879, he taught the history of education and Swiss school history at the University of Zurich (from 1890 as associate professor). His main research focus was on the Swiss pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi .

From 1872 to 1878, Hunziker was a member of the Zurich Cantonal Council . From 1886 to 1907 he taught as a private lecturer at the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum (today ETH Zurich ).

Hunziker married on September 22, 1868 in Bussnang or Wängi Luise Pupikofer. She was born on March 2nd in Weinfelden as the daughter of Johannes and Sophia (Scherrer) Pupikofer. She died in Bischofszell on December 18, 1918 . The children of Karl Otto and Luise Hunziker were Rudolf Hunziker (* February 5, 1870 in Zurich; † May 27, 1946 in Winterthur), Barbara Luise (* June 17, 1871; † October 16, 1871), Marie Julie (* 23. July 1872; † June 30, 1938) and Otto Frederick Hunziker (* December 25, 1873; † November 16, 1959).

Act

As a pastor he joined the Swiss Charitable Society (SGG) , was a member of the commission for poor teacher training and contributed with essays on Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg , Johann Jacob Wehrli and Pestalozzi.

As a pedagogue and Pestalozzi researcher, he headed the “Permanent School Exhibition” in Zurich from 1875, with a teaching material collection, library and archive. From 1878 he set up the “Pestalozzi-Stübchen” there, from which the later research facility “Pestalozzianum” emerged. He regularly published the Pestalozzi papers and in 1896 a new edition by Pestalozzis Lienhard and Gertrud .
