history
The publishing house was founded in 1985 by two historians as "Chronos Verlag für Geschichte". The first publications included works from the university environment, including the four-volume work “Workers and the Economy in Switzerland 1880–1914”, co-authored and edited by Erich Gruner .
Chronos Verlag then published further books on economic and social history topics, including publications such as the studies of the Independent Expert Commission Switzerland - Second World War (ICE). Significant titles include “Switzerland and the Jews 1933–1945” by Jacques Picard , “Europe and Switzerland 1945–1950” by Hans Ulrich Jost and “In the Land of Blood and Tears” by Jakob Künzler .
From the 1990s the publishing house began to expand its publishing program to include specialist and non-fiction books. At the same time, the area of economic and social history was supplemented with cultural-historical and political topics. Chronos Verlag has published the journal Traverse, aimed at historical researchers, three times a year since 1994. With 58 published titles, the publishing house reached its peak in book production in 2001. The publisher has a total of more than 900 titles.
