The Russenbrunnen (also Franzosenbrunnen or Kehler Brunnen ) is located opposite the Kehlen Chapel and in front of the house at Kehlerstrasse 52 (old forge) in the Dornbirn-Markt district .

history

The Russenbrunnen at 434  m above sea level. A. in Dornbirn recalls the Russian army under General Alexander Wassiljewitsch Suworow (see: Second Coalition War ) on the way to Lindau, which was marked by the hardships of war in Italy and Switzerland in October 1799 via Chur and Vorarlberg and was returning with numerous wounded .

Today, next to the Russenbrunnen, the Russenweg and the Russian wayside shrine are reminiscent of this decisive experience of the camp and the passage of the Russian troops (approx. 20,000 men with 6,000 horses with a resident population in Dornbirn of then 4,000 people) and the death of soldiers in Dornbirn in Dornbirn-Haselstauden .

The commemorative column at the Russenbrunnen and the wayside shrine at Knieweg in Haselstauden (1870) were donated by the French Count Anton Maria Franz Paul de Breda (born January 25, 1830 at Bertichéres Palace; † December 19, 1891 in Haselstauden), who lived in Haselstauden and was in exile .

One of the coats of arms shows that of the Ulmer family from Dornbirn.

purpose

The Russians fountain was as standpipes for water supply of the population and is today as livestock watering use. The water is collected a little above the fountain in the direction of Unterfallenberg and flows steadily through a pipe along the natural slope of the terrain to the fountain in the catch basin.

A well cooperative is responsible for maintaining the well.

The flowing water of this well was also used for the operation of the textile JG Ulmer ( Rotfarbfabrik later Fischbach of the company. FM Hammerle used).
