The Waldegg barrier was a barrier built by the Swiss Army between 1939 and 1940 during the Second World War to prevent the enemy from advancing into the Reuss Valley towards the Gotthard .

The blocking point of the Limmat position in the area of the city of Zurich ( Albisrieden district ) and the municipality of Uitikon is a military-historical monument of national importance. The blocking point was declassified and abolished in 1988 (tank ditch etc.) and 1993 (Pulverhausstrasse).

history

The Waldegg crossing is of historical and strategic importance. After the First Battle of Zurich in 1799, French and Austrian troops occupied this line.

One month after the beginning of the Second World War , General Guisan ordered the deployment of the army from the standby position to the Limmat position on October 4, 1939, with "Operation Order No. 2". With the connection Sargans - Walensee - Zürichsee - Limmat - Bözberg - Hauenstein , it became the first line of defense of the Swiss Army in an attack from the north. This was fortified from September 27, 1939, including the Waldegg locking point.

The three-kilometer-wide section of the 6th Division between Uetliberg , Waldegg and Urdorfer Senke consisted of a deep system of alternating positions that began on the Limmat and ended behind the Reppisch . There were no bunkered weapons positions, but fortified troop shelters. Only through the open Urdorf depression ran a tank barrier with 18 concreted weapon stands. The Waldegg locking point belonged to the area of the Uetliberg Fortress , where over 100 bullet-proof standardized shelters and caverns would have protected against enemy artillery use or air raids. They were part of the main defense position on the wooded heights south of the city of Zurich and the Limmat.

The Sappeurkompanie II / 6 (Sap Kp II / 6) of the 6th Division under Captain Kollbrunner built next to the fortress Uetliberg together with the Mittrailleurkompanie IV / 106 (Mitr Kp IV / 106) 1940 the most important anti-aircraft barrier (GPH) of the barrier, one almost 70 meter long and 5 meter wide tank ditch in the Waldegg-Feldermoos area as well as shelters, other GPHs and road blocks. The southern retaining wall of the tank ditch is one meter higher and crenellated. Four crew shelters were on the edge of the forest above Albisrieden (A 4907, 4908, 4909, 4910). Two GPH and four roadblocks strengthened the transition of the main road between Albisrieden / Triemli and Birmensdorf / Landikon. Along the side streets from Waldegg towards Buchhoger (west) and Uetliberg (east) there were more than two dozen shelters, a GPH (concrete post obstacle) and a street barricade (Pulverhausstrasse).

The barriers on the Waldegg were not protected by infantry bunkers as usual, but rather they delimited a target area for concentrated artillery use. 18 batteries with 72 cannon barrels in mostly open field artillery positions in the Ringlikon (Brand) area, Birmensdorf (Haslen, Maas, Ramerenwald, Risi, Egg, Schüren, Löffler), Bonstetten (Hörglen), Oberlunkhofen (Matteried) and Bremgarten (Hegnau) in a loose one , chessboard-like shape and well camouflaged, could direct their fire into this “cage”, but also work as far as Zurich, Wallisellen , Rümlang , Dielsdorf , Lägern and provide artillery fire protection at the Limmat crossings from Wipkingen and Dietikon .

Infantry bunker in the Waldegg area

The neighboring blocking points were the Uetliberg fortress in the east, the Birmensdorf blocking point in the south and the Urdorf blocking point in the west , which were supplemented by additional road and forest path barricades in the Albisrieden, Uitikon (Ringlikon, Buchhoger) and Birmensdorf area. After the fall of France at the end of June 1940, the army command ordered the suspension of almost all fortification work, as the Limmat position lost its importance for the time being and the general had decided to withdraw the majority of the army into the Reduit . During the Cold War , the locking point was part of the operational area of Field Division 5 .
