"Bachtel" is a common name in the region meaning "Bachtal" or " Bachtobel ". The masculine gender stems from the fact that the name of the mountain is shortened from Bachtalberg , as on the Gyger map from 1667. The eponymous Bachtal is that of the Sagenbach (on the southern flank of the mountain), on whose upper course the Bachtelweid lies.

The Bachtel used to have other names. In documents from the time before the middle of the 17th century, the name Berg Orn or also high Ornberg is used. The name Allmann (Allmannberg, Almenberg) was previously used as the highest elevation of the Allmann chain or Bachtel chain . On the map by Johannes Stumpf (1548) there is the entry "Alman M [ons]".

Since the middle of the 19th century, the name Allmann ( Allmen ) was gradually transferred to the second highest peak ( 1079  m above sea level ). The renaming of the Bachtel after the valley of the Sagenbach started from the east (forest), in the west around Hinwil the mountain was called Allmann for longer . The regional newspaper in Hinwil was called “Der Allmann” from 1852, while the name of a comparable publication in Wald was “Volksblatt vom Bachtel” from 1861 (since 1960 the two newspapers have been merged as Zürcher Oberländer ).

In 1837, Ludwig von Bollmann referred to today's Bachtel as the “real Allmann” (Switzerland: a handbook initially for travelers), and the name Bachtel-Horn is limited to today's Bachtelhörnli ( 968  m above sea level ). The map by Johannes Wild , created between 1843 and 1851, already describes the main summit as Bachtel , and the Bachtelhörnli as Hörnli . On the saddle between Bachtel and Bachtelhörnli the yard is Bachtel located. In the national map from 1909 the same courtyard is then called Unterbachtel (because it is now located below the summit called Bachtel ).

geography

The Bachtel lies between Hinwil in the north-west, Wald ZH in the south-east and Rüti ZH in the south-west. It is the highest point and southern end of the long chain of hills - Allmann chain or Bachtel chain - between the valleys of the Töss and Jona in the east and the Pfäffikersee and the Kempt in the west. The upper part of the mountain is mostly forested. The lower areas are used for agriculture. According to the classification of the SAC, the mountain belongs to the Eastern Swiss Prealps , which are referred to as the “Appenzell Alps” in other classifications .

With the exception of Sundays and public holidays, you can drive to the top. The roads from Hinwil and Wald to Orn ( 925  m above sea level ) are partially closed to traffic in winter when tobogganing is in progress.

To the southeast, below the summit, lies the Bachtelspalt at approx. 955 meters. There is a column that in 1939 when slipping a Nagelfluh originated head. It is accessible, but very narrow.

buildings

Observation tower

The Bachtel is a popular destination. There is a restaurant and the Bachtel observation tower on the summit of the Bachtel . A first wooden tower was built in 1873. The second tower made of metal, the old Bachtel tower , was stored after its dismantling because it was worthy of protection and is now on the pan handle . The current tower dates from 1986 and is 75 meters high.

The ski jumps in the Orn were demolished in 2003. As a replacement, the Bachtelblickschanze was built in Gibswil in 2005 .

There is also a pyramidal triangulation point on the Bachtel .

The Hasenstrick airfield (ICAO: LSPK) on the south side of the Bachtel had to cease operations in 2009 due to differences between the holder of the operating license and the owner of the property.
