Trento ( French [tʀiɛ] , Franco-Provençal [trəjɛ] ) is a Munizipalgemeinde and a civic community in the district of Martigny in the French speaking part of the Swiss canton of Valais .
geography
The municipality, which includes 22 hamlets, is located in the Vallée du Trient at the foot of the Mont-Blanc massif near the border with France . It is located on the Trient river of the same name , which rises from the Trient Glacier located in the municipality .
The north-western border towards the municipality of Finhaut is formed by the waters of Trento and Eau Noire, the south-western border towards France by the glaciated Aiguille du Tour ( 3540 m above sea level ), the south-eastern border towards Orsières by the Aiguilles Dorées ( 3519 m ). The north-eastern border towards Martigny is marked by the Col de la Forclaz ( 1527 m ).
history
The hamlet of Les Jeurs was around 1350 a small village, the hamlet still while Trent a spring pasture was.
In terms of the church, Trento was made a rectorate in 1830 and a parish in 1868 , but it was not until 1893 that it separated completely from Martigny .
Politically, after a vote in 1899, Trento split off in the following year from the municipality of Martigny-Combe , which in turn belonged to Martigny until 1841 .
In the Battle of Trento in 1844, a high point in the dispute between the Valais liberals and the Valais conservatives , the latter ("old Switzerland") triumphed over the former ("young Switzerland").

The population has long been in decline. In 1900 the community had 329 inhabitants, 188 in 1950 and 130 in 2000. It has recently recovered and stood at 161 as of December 31, 2018.
traffic
Trento can be reached from Martigny via the main road 203, which was opened in 1957, over the Col de la Forclaz , which continues as the Route départementale to Chamonix . Trento is connected to public transport by the Martigny – Col de la Forclaz – Trient postbus connection . In summer, selected routes continue to Châtelard-Frontière on the national border .
economy
Trient lived from cattle farming and in the second half of the 19th century from ice extraction from the Trient glacier. Tourism flourished in the Belle Époque . Today mainly commuters live in Trento .
