The Trient Glacier (French Glacier du Trient ) is a valley glacier in the municipality of Trient VS on the northern slope of the Mont Blanc massif in the extreme southwest of the canton of Valais , Switzerland . It is 4.5 km long and currently covers an area of around 6 km². Like almost all alpine glaciers, the Trient glacier is also affected by extensive shrinkage as part of global warming ; between 1900 and 2017 it was shortened by almost 1,400 meters.
location
The firn field of the Trient Glacier lies in a 2 km wide arena at 3,000 to 3,200 m above sea level. M. (also called Plateau du Trient ), surrounded by the Pointe d'Orny ( 3271 m above sea level ) in the east, the Aiguilles Dorées (up to 3519 m above sea level ) in the south and the Aiguille du Tour ( 3540 m above sea level ) in the west. The border between Switzerland and France runs through the latter . Below this firn field, the glacier, which is only around 600 m wide, flows northwards down the steep slope (gradient of more than 50% in some cases). The glacier tongue currently ends just below 1800 m . This is where the Trento flows away and flows into the Rhone north of Martigny .
The Trient is toward the east over the fissured hanging pass Col d'Orny with the 2.5 km long Ornygletscher (French Glacier d'Orny connected). To the southwest there is a connection with the Glacier du Tour in France , and on the northern slope of the Aiguille du Tour the firn field of the Glacier des Grands (2 km²), which is also connected to the Trient Glacier, extends.
On the southern slope of the Pointe d'Orny above the Plateau du Trient stands at 3170 m above sea level. M. the Cabane du Trient , a hut of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC. It serves as a starting point for mountain climbs and glacier tours in the northeastern part of the Mont-Blanc massif.
indicator
The Trient glacier reacts very quickly to climatic changes due to its steepness. Like the Upper Grindelwald Glacier , it is a kind of early indicator for the development of the Alpine glaciers in general. In the past 150 years, the glacier tongue has accordingly retreated from around 1600 m to around 2300 m.
