history
The earliest traces of settlement are a Roman villa and early Halemannic graves. Benken as Pecchinhova was first mentioned in a document in 858 in a deed of donation to the Rheinau monastery . In the 13th century the place is called Benchon . In 1540 Zurich took control of Benken.

Others
In the last few years, Benken has become known primarily for considering the possibility of building a repository for high-level and long-lived medium-level waste in the region there.
In 1985 the waste disposal company NAGRA presented a study on the feasibility of a repository in the crystalline rock of northern Switzerland with the so-called " Project Guarantee ". Since this study could not provide complete proof of the feasibility, the government ordered further investigations which should also be extended to sediment as host rock. After a broad selection process that included possible locations in Weiach and Böttstein , among others , NAGRA decided in 1994 to concentrate the further geological investigations on the Opalinus Clay rock in the Zurich wine region . The results of a deep drilling near Benken and a seismic survey in the region formed the basis for a new feasibility study, which was handed over to the authorities in December 2002.
