Stammheim is a political municipality in the canton of Zurich ( Andelfingen district ) formed on January 1, 2019 , which emerged from the merger of the former political communities of Oberstammheim , Unterstammheim and Waltalingen . The new municipality has 2746 inhabitants and covers an area of 2393 hectares.

geography
Stammheim is located in the northeastern corner of the canton of Zurich in the Zurich wine country . The community includes the towns of Ober- and Unterstammheim, Waltalingen, Guntalingen , the Zurich half of Wilen near Neunforn and the hamlet of Girsberg . The northern, eastern and southern municipal boundaries also form part of the canton border with the canton of Thurgau . The Stammertal , in which the municipality is located, is a glacial landscape with a multitude of drumlins and other geomorphological manifestations. In the north of the municipality is the Stammerberg .
About 56% of the community area is used for agriculture, 35% is forested and a good 9% is built over.
politics
In the 2019 National Council elections, the share of the vote in Stammheim was: SVP 37.12%, FDP 20.37%, Greens 10.29%, glp 10.07%, SP 9.66%, EVP 3.84%, BDP 2.41 %, EDU 2.11% and CVP 2.10%.
The mayor is Beatrice Ammann (as of May 2020).

- The Reformed Church of Waltalingen with its partly well-preserved frescoes from the Middle Ages.
- The well-preserved parish hall, which has been in use since 1530.
In addition, Stammheim is considered to be one of the best preserved timber frame villages in Switzerland. In order to maintain this, few or no new buildings or conversions are carried out in the village center. Some of the buildings are under homeland security.

The Stammheim station is on the railway line Winterthur Etzwilen and every half hour from the S-Bahn S 29 Winterthur - Stein a. Rhine served. The Postbus line 605 connects Stammheim, Guntalingen and Waltalingen via Ossingen with Andelfingen . Line 823 connects Stammheim with Diessenhofen and Frauenfeld train station . The community is in the area of the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund as well as in the tariff area of Ostwind .
