Isabelle Waldberg , born Isabelle Margaretha Maria Farner, (born May 10, 1911 in Oberstammheim ; † April 12, 1990 in Chartres ) was a Swiss artist and sculptor .

Life and artistic work

Isabelle Farner was born in Oberstammheim in the Swiss canton of Zurich as the daughter of a farming family. Her passion for craftsmanship arose early on when, as a child, she watched the construction of a timber frame house across from her parents' farm. “In doing so I realized that it is possible to create new shapes with your own hands. I saw the house develop piece by piece, like a monumental sculpture. The smell of plaster is closely related to this first impression, ”she says about it.

Isabelle Farner studied with the German-Swiss architect Hannes Meyer in Zurich and moved to Paris in 1936 . There she studied with Marcel Gimond at the Académie Colarossi , with Robert Vlerick at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and with Charles Malfray at the Académie Ranson . After studying in Florence in 1937, she returned to Paris, where she met Alberto Giacometti , Georges Bataille , André Masson and her future husband, the writer Patrick Waldberg .

After marrying Patrick Waldberg, she took the name Isabelle Waldberg. After the birth of her son Michel Waldberg in 1940, Isabelle Waldberg traveled to New York in 1942 , where she lived for the next five years. There she joined a group of surrealist artists living in exile in the United States. Among them were André Breton , Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp . From 1947 to 1948 she was co-editor of the surrealist magazine Da Costa Encyclopédique .
