from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oskar Farner (born September 22, 1884 in Unterstammheim , † July 16, 1958 in Zurich ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and Zwingli researcher .

Life

Oskar Farner was the son of Alfred Farner († 1908), pastor of the Reformed Church in Unterstammheim .

He matriculated to study theology at the University of Basel with lectures by Paul Wernle , which he continued at the University of Marburg , the University of Berlin and the University of Zurich .

In 1908 he became pastor in Zollikon and was then from 1937 to 1950 as pastor at the Grossmünster in Zurich; During this time he drafted a Christmas letter to the Jews of Switzerland in 1942 , in which he pointed out that Adolf Hitler was initially targeting the Jews and then all of Christianity . This letter was signed by 37 personalities, including Karl Barth , Emil Brunner and Eberhard Vischer , and is probably the first document in the history of Christianity in which Christians confessed to Judaism.

From 1932 he was on the church council and from 1947 to 1955 president of the church council as well as editor-in-chief of the church messenger for the canton of Zurich .

As early as 1951, he called the leading men of the German- Swiss Evangelical Reformed regional churches together to make contact with the leadership of the German Evangelical Church Congress , so that in the following year over 3000 Swiss people took part in the Stuttgart Church Congress.

Oskar Farner was married to Mary Wieser (1891–1963) since 1916.

Scientific work

In 1930 he became, with his habilitation thesis Die Kirchenpatrozinien des Kanton Graubünden on its importance for research into the oldest missionary history in Switzerland , private lecturer for church history at the theological faculty of the University of Zurich; from 1938 to 1954 he was adjunct professor . For the most part, he dealt with Huldrych Zwingli and wrote various translations, commentaries and interpretations on this, as well as devoting himself to the Zurich Reformation . Among other things, he published articles in the Zwingliana magazine .
