Eberhard Vischer was the third child of Wilhelm Vischer and Sophie Heussler (1839–1915) in Göttingen. His father taught there as a private lecturer in history . Only one year after Eberhard Vischer was born, the father took a position as senior librarian at the university library in his hometown of Basel, which is why the family moved back to the knee of the Rhine.

For this reason, Eberhard Vischer went through all the schools in Basel except for six months in Bern . However, he received his first lessons from his maternal grandmother, Sophia Thurneysen (1819–1872). When she died, he went straight to second grade at St. Peter's Parish School. After completing his high school diploma, Eberhard Vischer completed his theology studies in 1884 at the universities of Basel , Giessen and Göttingen .

In 1888 Eberhard Vischer was ordained after passing exams . During his studies he was strongly influenced by his teacher Adolf von Harnack . At the age of 20, he encouraged him to write a paper on the Apocalypse in order to investigate its Jewish origin. In order to be able to do his doctorate under Adolf von Harnack, Eberhard Vischer went to Berlin in autumn 1888, shortly after his ordination . However, he soon fell ill with typhoid fever , so that he had to sacrifice a whole year to recover.

In 1890 Vischer took over the pastoral office in Arosa , a place that was just developing into a health resort . In 1893 Vischer moved to Davos Dorf and worked there as a pastor for two more years. When he fell ill again in 1895 as a result of flu, he decided, on medical advice, to give up the pastor's office, return to Basel and do his habilitation there .

From 1898 Eberhard Vischer worked as a private lecturer at the University of Basel. Afterwards he was associate professor from 1902 to 1907 and finally from 1907 to 1937 full professor of old and medieval church history and the New Testament . He gave the speech at the 450th anniversary of the University of Basel in 1910 and at the Reformation celebration in 1929 (400 years of the Basel Reformation). Two years later he became rector for a year .

Eberhard Vischer was involved in various associations and also took a seat in various committees, sometimes up into old age. This includes his activities in the Basel Church Synod (1904–1946), in the Education Council (1918–1935) and in the Grand Council of Basel-Stadt . In addition, he was since 1902 member or president of the theological concordat examination authority (1913-1943), also since 1902 member or president of the Protestant Church Aid Association (1923-1943) and the library commission of the University of Basel (1928-1946), where he was the latter was a member from 1913. Furthermore, he campaigned early on for church women's suffrage and the admission of theology students to the exams.

In 1904 he received an honorary doctorate from Giessen University and from Warsaw University in 1935 .

Eberhard Vischer's estate was donated to the Basel University Library in 1956 as a gift from the heirs . The handover took place through the son Wilhelm Vischer ; The latter also handed over the correspondence of Adolf von Harnack as supplements in 1966 and further documents from his father in the university library in 1973.
