The Reformed Church Unterstammheim is a Zurich country church in the municipality of Stammheim .

history

Several predecessor buildings of the Middle Ages , consecrated to St. Mary , are assumed. The core of today's church dates from the 13th century, with the choir and tower being renewed in 1515–1517. The nave and the directly adjoining rectory were rebuilt in 1779–80. In 1923 the church was renovated and modernized.

The parish is congruent with the political community. With the Gallus Chapel in Oberstammheim and the Antonius Chapel in Waltalingen , the other villages of Stammheim have their own church buildings.

Location and appearance

The church is located on a foothill of the Stammerberg , surrounded by vineyards high above the village of Unterstammheim. In the northwest is the community cemetery.

The dominant, 40-meter-high tower with a cheese bite roof and distinctive dials can be seen from afar. The tower edges and the polygonal choir are provided with staggered exposed masonry.

inner space

The retracted choir of the church has a late Gothic star vault with vault paintings. The paintings (showing, among other things, St. Augustine ) date from 1517 . They already show aspects of the Renaissance style, which is softer than the late Gothic . Therefore, although they are only sparsely available, they are particularly valuable for the Zurich region, especially since the sacred frescoes of the Renaissance never really developed here due to the Reformation (from 1520). Quality tracery windows light up the choir . In 1773 the choir was equipped with the still preserved choir stalls .

The nave , consecrated in 1780, is illuminated through arched windows. The ceiling is provided with subtle classicistic stucco . Noteworthy is the L-shaped gallery which, with its orientation towards the pulpit, is a specific feature of Protestant church building in eastern Switzerland. The gallery rests on wooden pillars. The font dates from 1642, the richly inlaid pulpit from 1611.
