description

Exterior

The church is located on a hill in the center of the village of Waltalingen. On the opposite the nave increased choir an octagonal sitting ridge turret with a pointed spire. Instead of a tower clock, there is a dial in the gable of the choir. The appearance of the church is dominated by two covered steps, of which the western one gives access to the small gallery . The roof truss and ridge turrets can be reached via the northern stairs. It ends in a half-timbered - bay , which is a rare example of the use of truss construction (which is typical of the farmhouse architecture of the region) in the Swiss church. The staircase is dated to 1812 on an inscription underneath it.

inner space

The nave is spanned by a discreetly painted wooden barrel and is separated from the rectangular choir with cross vaults by a semicircular choir arch . On the south side, the widening of the nave from the Baroque period is visible. In the chancel there is the wooden pulpit on a stone plinth , made in the 17th century, as well as numerous valuable carved and inscribed church places from the 17th and 18th centuries and a cupboard from 1673.

The nave is illuminated by gothic pointed arched windows as well as a round arched window, a rectangular window and an Oculus window above the gallery. Since 2012 there has been a three-register positive organ by Erwin Erni (Stans) on it.

The late Gothic frescoes in the nave were created in 1419 and show Christ in Getsehmane , The betrayal of Judas and Christ before Herod in three ornamentally delimited fields . In 1436 the fresco was created on the south wall, which shows Antonius the Great healing victims of the Antonius fire. A smaller fresco on the choir arch shows St. Dorothea . The wall paintings in the choir date from 1485. In the choir arch, Antonius the Great is depicted in the forest, stabbing the devil in the leg with a cross staff. Under the sound cover of the pulpit, Antonius is shown supervising a monastery building .
