Wilhelm Baur (publisher, 1895)

Wilhelm Baur (born February 16, 1895 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ; † May 18, 1973 in Bad Ragaz ) was a German newspaper publisher .

Life

Baur was born as the son of a goldsmith in Schwäbisch Gmünd and graduated from the Reuchlin-Gymnasium in Pforzheim. He became a journalist for the Baden Observer and secretary of the Center Party for Central Baden. During the Nazi era he worked for the Badenia Bausparkasse . In 1946 he became the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Badische Neuesten Nachrichten (BNN). For 25 years he was a member of the CDU parliamentary group in the Karlsruhe municipal council; his newspaper was often criticized as a CDU mouthpiece. On December 17, 1969, he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Karlsruhe. Baur died on May 18, 1973 while on vacation in Bad Ragaz. His nephew Hans Wilhelm Baur inherited him at the BNN.

Baur was buried in the Rüppurr cemetery.

Honors

In 1965 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition to the honorary citizenship conferred in 1969, Wilhelm-Baur-Strasse in Karlsruhe was named after him in 1978 . The Wilhelm Baur Foundation , founded in 1994, also received his name.

In the 1. FC Pforzheim was Baur honorary member.
