The Reuchlin-Gymnasium is a general education high school in the city of Pforzheim with a linguistic and a scientific focus. It was named after the humanist Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522).

history

The history of the Reuchlin-Gymnasium goes back over 500 years. In 1447 a Pforzheim Latin school was first mentioned as a predecessor school , the establishment of which is still in the dark. It probably owes its existence to the establishment of the collegiate monastery at the St. Michael Castle Church. Members of the monastery were in all likelihood the teachers when five-year-old Johannes Reuchlin entered the school. Reuchlin was taught here for ten years.

In the last two decades of the 15th century, the Pforzheim Latin School gained greater importance. It grew beyond the Latin schools in Baden-Baden and Ettlingen. The Latin school in Pforzheim had good teachers, and important men boast that they received their first knowledge in this school in Pforzheim. Under Rector Georg Simler , the school changed from a collegiate school to a municipal school around 1500. During this time Johannes Hiltebrant also taught at the school.

The school's heyday lasted half a century. With Reuchlin's death, however, the importance of the Pforzheim Latin School gradually declined.

In 1692 the Dominican monastery , in which the Latin school was housed, was completely destroyed by a large city fire. The Latin school as "Collegium Reuchlinianum" in the sacristy annex of the castle church was not continued until 1718.

In 1849, a private secondary school for girls started operations in the rooms of the grammar school , which moved into a new building in Rosenstrasse in 1859 and was soon converted into a public school. This is where today's Hilda-Gymnasium emerged.

The rapid growth of the city at the end of the 19th century was matched by the construction of new school buildings. During this time, the grammar school was built as the successor to the Latin school on the bridge in Goethestrasse, which was moved into in 1905. It was a stately Renaissance building. The highlight was the announcement that the new school would be called “Reuchlin-Gymnasium”.

The Uferstraße on the Enz near Reuchlin-Gymnasium was named Simmlerstraße in memory of the first known principal of the Latin school. Eleven years later, the upper secondary school, today's Hebel-Gymnasium , moved into its new house in the immediate vicinity of the Reuchlin-Gymnasium.

The destruction of the city on February 23, 1945 hit the Reuchlin-Gymnasium so badly that it was never rebuilt. In contrast, the upper secondary school (Hebel-Gymnasium) was rebuilt, which took the Reuchlin-Gymnasium and the girls' secondary school into their rooms. For twenty years (1948–1968) the Reuchlin-Gymnasium was a guest at the Hebel-Gymnasium.

In 1955, on the occasion of the 500th birthday of the humanist Johannes Reuchlin, the Reuchlin-Gymnasium regained its organizational independence.

The Reuchlin-Gymnasium was only able to move into its own house at the old water tower on October 25, 1968. The Reuchlin-Gymnasium is located far away from the noisy city traffic, but still close to the city and with the city bus line 7 and direct school bus connections to the main train station, all parts of the city are easily accessible. The four buildings of the grammar school, the classroom wing with the atrium as a place of encounter, communication and celebration, the music pavilion, the scientific building with the sports hall, since 1970 the extension and since 1999 the "Greek Theater" rise up in the midst of green spaces and playgrounds ". Almost 900 students are currently attending the Reuchlin-Gymnasium.

Educational opportunities

The Reuchlin-Gymnasium offers an old and a new language train as well as a bilingual one after school entry . The school is particularly well-known for its highly gifted train .

In the old-language train, Latin is taught four hours a week from the 5th grade onwards .

French is the second foreign language in modern language and is taught from grade 6.

The bilingual train has more English lessons (six hours a week instead of four in grade 5 and four instead of three in grade 6) and French from grade 6 onwards.

In Grade 8, each student can choose between Greek and Science and Technology . The pupils of all grades who did not yet have French in the 6th grade can still choose it instead of Greek or Science and Technology.

The highly gifted train, which the school has had since 2006, has Latin from the 5th grade and is taught by specially trained teachers. In order to be accepted into the highly gifted train, a test and the trial lesson must be passed.

In addition, every student can acquire the “ European Gymnasium ” certificate if they choose Spanish as their fourth foreign language in class 10 and have thus learned two ancient (Latin and Greek) and two modern languages (English and Spanish). If you choose Spanish as a subject, English lessons are shortened to two hours per week.
